Fishing in Ireland's Northern Region
Extending from Mullaghmore Head to Malin Head the Northern Region encompasses some of the most dramatic scenery and productive fisheries in Ireland. It is also home to a significant stretch of the Shannon-Erne Canal, which links the Shannon navigation to the Eniskillen in Northern Ireland.
There is a multitude of angling available for coarse, game and sea enthusiasts.
There is also excellent boat angling for blue shark and other species. For the shore angler there is no shortage of marks with the chance of specimen wrasse from St. John's Point.
Coarse angling in the region is superb. Many specimen hybrids, bream and tench have been caught in the many lakes of the northern region, particularly in Leitrim and Monaghan.
The game angling is also first class. There are many wild trout waters for the trout angler. Lough Melvin is justly famous for its gillaroo and sonaghen trout, sporting fish well worth a days angling. There are many premier salmon fisheries also, so the salmon angler is nearly always guaranteed a fishable river in some part of the region.
Lough Melvin Programme
The Lough Melvin Programme will develop a cross-border Catchment Management Plan to identify options, actions and recommendations to reduce the impact of human activities on the lake. The Plan will focus on nutrients as the key threat but it will also cover other possible threats.
