Catch and Release for Atlantic Salmon

Lakes, rivers and coastal stretches are surveyed and mapped, fisheries are managed and stocked, while banks and access routes to the waters edge are developed to ensure the visitor gets directly and easily to the hotspots.

Salmon and trout fishing

The essence of game angling in Ireland is the pursuit of salmon and trout in wild places. The Northern Region offers a unique opportunity to experience salmon and sea trout fishing and flyfishing in some unspoilt and breathtaking surroundings.

Coarse Fishing

Coarse fishing in the Northern Region offers solitude and tranquility. But if you prefer your angling a little more competitive there are numerous competitions throughout the season that range from club events to nationals and internationals.

Pike Fishing

Excellent, plentiful habitat is one of the attributes of Irish pike fishing that leads to good numbers of pike and large fish. The region is ‘studded’ with numerous lakes, loughs and rivers that abound with pike. Fly fishing for pike is a rapidly growing branch of the sport in the region.

Sea Fishing

Sea angling can be enjoyed throughout the year with different species targeted during the different seasons. The Northern Region is becoming justly famous for its Blue Fin Tuna fishing. A number of Tuna fishing boats are now operating and the region can boast the European record.

Please take note:

Access to many of the fisheries is across private lands and the Board has developed and maintained a good relationship with landowners but it is important that anglers do not compromise this by behaving in inappropriate ways.

Above all they must not leave litter, light fires, leave gates open or break down fences and if in doubt should always ask permission before entering on lands.
