Salmon and trout reports

Monday 26th March to Sunday 1st April 2006.

RIVER DROWES

The Drowes has been dropping over the week with the prevalent high pressure system bringing dry and sunny weather. This gave some bright days with little wind which made for less than ideal salmon angling conditions. The fishery was fairly quiet for this time of the season. There were salmon to be caught however as an English party of 3 anglers proved on Thursday & Friday. They caught 4 salmon between them on the fly. The fish weighed 8, 9, 9 & 10lb and were all returned.

Lough Melvin

The salmon angling on Lough Melvin was slow this week with no salmon recorded despite good numbers of boats being out on a number of days. This could be attributable to the very bright days with little or no wind.

The trout fishing is picking up with fair hatches of early sedges and buzzers although the cold nip is still in the air. There have been few anglers fishing for trout this season so far. A number of trout were caught over the week for those did fish. We fished Melvin on Sunday and caught good numbers of sonaghan and gillaroo on the dry flies although none were ‘monsters’. There were good numbers of trout rising in certain areas to tan coloured buzzers and sedges. A size 16 cinnamon coloured dry hopper accounted for most of the fish.
