Salmon and trout reports

Monday 29th January to Sunday 4th February 2007.

RIVER DROWES

The River has been in fine fettle this week and a high pressure system brought nice settled weather. The sunny and still weather was a welcome relief from the constant wind and rain we have been receiving despite the frosts. The river however was not very busy over the week and fairly quiet at the weekend. There were a couple of salmon caught and released in the middle of the week and I have no confirmation of names as yet. A number of salmon were also hooked and lost and a couple of ‘Good’ salmon observed in the river. There was a total of 14 spring salmon recorded from the River for January despite the very high water for most of the month.

Lough Melvin

Lough Melvin opened for salmon angling on Thursday with some 20 boats out on the first day in pursuit of the first salmon of the season to be caught from the ‘Lough’. Disappointingly, there were no fresh salmon caught for the day. There have since been 3 or 4 boats fishing each day and we still await the ‘first salmon of the season’. The flat cold weather has not suited angling on the Lough. A number of kelts were caught and released and some good spring fish were observed.
