Salmon and trout reports

Monday 9th to Sunday 15th April 2007.

RIVER DROWES

Once again this week there has been little rain and the Drowes remains at low levels. We require some decent rainfall to raise Lough Melvin and river levels. Consequently, there were very few anglers fishing for the week. Bernard McCullough recorded a fine 12lb salmon though, caught from deep water at ‘The Washstones’ on a spinner.

LOUGH MELVIN

Lough Melvin remains unseasonable low. The Lough continued to fish fairly well for salmon again over the week, however. There were 2 salmon caught midweek (details to be confirmed). On Saturday, Bobby Beattie, Derrygonnelly, had a good day with 2 salmon caught trolling, weighing 9 & 9½lb. On Sunday, Steven Kennedy, Lisbellaw, recorded an 8lb 2oz salmon caught trolling. The trout angling is slow to start this season and there are few reports of anglers targeting trout as yet. Despite the sunny & dry days, air temperatures were low. Still, the swallows have arrived so the warmer days cannot be far behind.

ESKE FISHERY

The Eske Fishery is closed for salmon angling this season so reports will be for brown and sea trout. The sea trout do not make an appearance until July so its brown trout all the way till then! The fishery remains at very low water levels with no rainfall to speak of. There has been no angling undertaken as yet this season.

OWENEA FISHERY

The Owenea Fishery was quiet this week with only 3 visiting anglers fishing on Saturday. This is no doubt due to the very low water levels. The gauge never moved from 0.1 metres! This of course gave a very low gauge average of 0.1 metres for the week. We await the rains.
