The Drowes has been running at nice levels all week and is at a lovely level at the time of writing. The fishing has also been very good for those anglers that ventured out. The fishery is still quieter than would be expected for the time of the season however, with very few anglers fishing over the week and only 25 rods fishing over the weekend. There were a number of salmon recorded all caught, understandably, at the weekend.
James McMullin caught and released an 8lb salmon on a Flying ‘C’ on Saturday and ‘Harry’ from Derry caught a 10lb fish from Briney’s Pool on the fly on the same day. This fish was also released. On Sunday, visiting Welsh Angler Ian Callow caught an 8lb salmon from the Boat House Pool on the fly. Colin Gardner caught an 8lb fish from the Mill Pool. The fish was caught on the fly and released again. Mr Carty, Enniskillen, caught a 9lb salmon on the spinner and released the same.
All in all, there are a good number of fish entering the fishery and with the present water conditions the prospects are good. More salmon would normally be recorded but with angling attendance low, catches will follow suit!
Lough Melvin has been quiet again this week with only 1 or 2 boats out each day. There is still no report of the first spring fish caught on Melvin, only a good number of kelts which is to be expected after the good run of salmon in 2006. There must have been good numbers of salmon that spawned on the fishery this winter, but with the very wet weather it was impossible to get accurate Redd counts with the rivers constantly in flood. Highlight of the week on the Lough was Dessie McHugh’s 8½lb trout caught on Monday on a Gold and Black Devon Minnow from Flanagan’s Bay.
