Salmon and trout angling | Coarse angling
Once again this week there has been little rain and the Drowes still remains at low levels. The fishery was very quiet and there are no reports of salmon caught to date.
Lough Melvin still remains unseasonably low with no rain to raise water heights. The Lough was fairly quiet this week although salmon were recorded by some of those venturing out. On Saturday, Darren Maguire recorded a 5½lb salmon caught trolling and Raymond Dundaff, Derrygonnelly, accounted for a 9lb salmon. There was another salmon caught on Sunday and I am awaiting details of the same. There are still few anglers fishing for trout and there is little to report on this front. We need some rain to freshen things up a little!
The Eske was low all week once again until some rain on Saturday night raised levels by some 4 inches. This was enough to ensure a good downstream movement of kelts and hopefully aid the smolts on their way to sea. The fishery was quiet with only 1 angler fishing. This was a visiting French angler, Michel Aepertite, who fished over Saturday and Sunday on the Lough recording a number of brown trout caught on dry and wet flies.
The Owenea was running at very low levels (0.1 metres) all week and some rain on Saturday night saw the gauge only reading 0.15 metres on Sunday. The fishery was understandably quiet with no anglers fishing over the week.
There are a few anglers in the area who report good catches of Pike. Gowna has been producing Pike up to 14lb. A Pike weighing 22lb. was fished from the Finn River near Annies Bridge. L ough Altrain beside Killykeen has produced a Pike weighing 19lb. Meanwhile two French Anglers bagged 50 Pike this week the biggest 75cm. Two Belgiums fishing the Arva/Carrigallen also West Cavan area including Bunerky report 95 Pike some up to 12lb.
