Salmon and trout reports

Monday 19th to Sunday 25th February 2007.

RIVER DROWES

The Drowes has been running at nice levels giving some good angling conditions over the week although few anglers fished from Monday to Tuesday. A few salmon were caught at the start of the week. With the onset of spring tides there was a good run of salmon on Saturday and there were 3 salmon recorded on Saturday and 2 on Sunday. All the fish weighed from 9 to 10lb with 1 being caught on the fly (Briney’s), one on shrimp (Washstones) and the rest on either a Flying ‘C’ or Rapalas.

Lough Melvin

Lough Melvin has been fairly quiet also with few anglers venturing forth. I have confirmation of the first salmon to be caught on Melvin however. The fish weighed 7lb and was caught by Seamus O’Dare on a Devon Minnow on the 14th of February from the Sunken Island at Garrison. There are large numbers of Kelts being caught and returned and showing on the Lough and it would seem that there has been very good numbers of salmon that spawned over the winter.

There have been a few hardy anglers venturing out after trout and it seems that for those that did there was good fishing to be had on the wet flies. One pair of anglers caught and released 13 Sonaghan up to 1lb and lost a ‘Good Gillaroo’. Most of the fish came to black flies such as a Bibio. The Sonaghan also were in good condition which is pleasing to see this early on in the season (the Sonaghan normally do not overwinter as well as the other species due to the fact that they are mainly plankton feeders)
