Salmon and trout reports

Monday 21st to Sunday 27th May 2007

RIVER DROWES

Water levels on the Drowes were fair for the greater part of the week but were falling towards the end of the week. At the time of writing levels are still fair but a fresh would be welcome. There were 4 salmon reported over the week, 2 on Tuesday and 2 on Saturday caught on the fly. I am still awaiting details of captors etc. With the approaching spring tides, the good run the river has received this season should continue.

LOUGH MELVIN

Lough Melvin was fairly quiet this week with regards to salmon angling. The first salmon caught on the fly was reported from the Rossinver Fishery however. The fish weighed 8lb and was caught by Francis Feely from Ward’s Point.

The Mayfly hatch has begun on Melvin so the trout fishing should be picking up though reports of trout fishing this week are mixed. 2 anglers did have a good bag of sonaghan during the week from Kinlough Bay but most reports are that the fishing was poor. The bright days and unseasonably cold north and east winds seem to have put paid to any hopes of good fishing with few trout seeming to be feeding. We are still receiving the odd ground frost at night! You wouldn’t think it was nearly June with boat anglers still requiring thermals, neoprene’s and gloves! The Kinlough Anglers held there annual Club Fly Competition on Sunday which was won by E. Haran with 3 fish.

ESKE FISHERY

Water levels on the Eske River were excellent for the week. The river was a little high on Monday but fell nicely over the week to finish the week still at fair levels. There were anglers fishing however with the cold north and easterly winds making fishing somewhat unpleasant on the Lough. Visiting angler Brendan Howard was out for 2 days fishing recording a number of Brown Trout. Local angler Tommy Burns and his young son Conor were fishing on Saturday recording good numbers of brown trout caught on the fly. It was great to see Conor so delighted on catching his first ever fish!

OWENEA FISHERY

The Owenea received two floods over the week, one on Monday (0.31m) and one on Friday (0.28m). This gave good water for most of the week resulting in a nice gauge average of 0.24 metres. 10 visiting rods were fishing for the week on Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday. There are a number of salmon now present in the fishery. Visiting Dublin angler Frank Senior, recorded a 10lb salmon caught from The Crambam on beat 3 on the fly on Saturday. I also have details of 2 salmon caught previously. The first salmon of the year was caught 3 weeks ago by Packy John McNeelis and weighed 13lb. Two weeks ago, John McFadden accounted for a salmon of 6½lb caught from The Gubbin on beat 5.

Coarse angling Report

31 May 2007

Town Lake Killeshandra has been fishing very good recently with good mixed bags being reported. Some nice Tench and Roach have been bagged at Castle River, meanwhile the Derries at Sean's Shore is giving good mixed bags of 40/50lb with some Bream.

Some Belgium Pike Anglers bagged 1,115 Pike last week using Belly Boats on the smaller lakes in the Gowna/Arva area. The largest Pike was 1.7m in length.

Leprechaun Chair and Flynn's Pass are again fishing well with 50/60lb fish being bagged at Flynn's Pass mostly Bream. Killykeen has also been giving good Bream in recent days.

There are plenty of Roach, Skimmer Bream and Perch being caught on Drumlona and the Dromore River is fishing good with mixed bags of 60/70lb.
