Salmon and trout reports

Monday 23rd to Sunday 29th April 2007.

RIVER DROWES

There was a small amount rainfall over the week which gave a small fresh in the river. Not the good flood we would prefer but still, better than nothing! The fishery remains quiet however and only 6 visitors fished over the weekend. There are good numbers of fish in the river however. 5 salmon were recorded over the week. The fish were caught by Geordie McAteer, Brian McEvoy, Steven Moates, Marius Kettles and Joe White and weighed 9, 7, 9, 8 and 9lb and were caught from the Black Hole, Crooked Pool, Dipper’s, Money Hole and Lennox’s on spinner & fly. All were released again. Good numbers of fish have been showing in the river and the story from anglers is that they are ‘not taking’.

LOUGH MELVIN

There was some rainfall over the week which raised levels on the Lough slightly. The week was very quiet however with few anglers fishing. The only salmon caught was by Bobbie Beattie on Sunday and weighed 7lb. There were reports of good trout rises in the evenings to Buzzers and Caenis though the fish proved hard to catch.

ESKE FISHERY

On Monday the Lough and River was very low but we then received some good rainfall which saw the river running at lovely levels by Wednesday which lasted into the weekend. This did not encourage any anglers out but did result in great numbers of salmon Kelts descending the river. I have never seen kelts in so good a condition before, no fungus and now as silver as a fresh fish. It is always sad to see them hanging about the river to no good end. We now have virtually a third of last years upstream run has left as kelts! A tremendous spawning survival rate. From the counter to the estuary is only around 1 mile. I hope they are now feasting on seafood. This boasts well for when the fishery reopens to salmon fishing.

OWENEA FISHERY

The river was running at very low levels on Monday but rose over the next couple of days to give fair levels on Wednesday & Thursday (0.29 metres). The fishery was fairly quiet given the conditions midweek with 3 rods fishing over the week. I have no reports of the 1st salmon of the season yet.

Coarse angling Report

03 May 2007

Carrigallen Pike Angling Club held a competition on Gulladoo Lake on Sunday 29th. April. 33 boats took part. Con Hope Mullingar took first prise of €1,000 with a Pike weighing 13lb 14ozs. Heaviest bag went to Domnic Gallagher, Duleek 41lb 9ozs (7 fish). He is an uncle of the Gallagher brothers of Oasis. 82 Pike were caught in all with weights of 13lb 14ozs, 13lb 6ozs, 10lb 4 ozs.

There are not too many anglers in the Cootehill area, but those who are fishing report some good trout, skimmer bream and tench on Corravoo Lake and Bairds Shore. Pike fishing is report to be good in this region.
