RIVER DROWES

Angling was very good on the Drowes this week despite the river running at low levels all week and fairly low angler numbers. There were few one day visiting rods fishing with most of the angling effort coming from the rods renting the angling cottages. The River had a great run of grilse over the week. There were numerous records of catches over the week of mainly grilse in the 3 to 4½lb category with fish up to 6lb. Given here are some of the catches spread over the week.

Alan Lawns and Colin Berryman both recorded 2 grilse apiece of 3 and 4lb caught on Tuesday on shrimp. Gerry McMahon recorded 3 grilse and Gary Bennett 1 grilse. A. Morgan caught and released a 6lb grilse with Gary Morrow recording a 3½lb fish. Hugh Aitcheson and Pat McMahon recorded grilse of 4½ and 6lb respectively caught on the fly. At the time of writing the river is steadily rising due to good rainfall we are receiving at present and prospects look excellent for the coming week.

LOUGH MELVIN

Trout angling on Lough Melvin this week was been excellent over the week with good numbers of decent sonaghan caught on the wet flies from the drifts in the Garrison area, Bilberry Island to Maguire’s Island and the sunken islands off Maguire’s. There are also good numbers of fresh grilse showing in the Lough but there has been little angling effort for the same with very few boats out targeting salmon. The Rossinver Fishery had good numbers of fresh grilse showing by the end of the week.

The Rossinver Fishery held their club 2 day salmon fly angling competition over the weekend. Despite there being large numbers of fresh grilse in the bay at present, and plenty of local knowledge out on the water, there was only 1 salmon caught which won the competition. This was caught by Raymond Magee and weighed 3lb. The salmon were just not in a taking mood and were not even rolling at flies. The heaviest trout prize was won by Andres Ferreira with a fish of 2lb 3oz.

ESKE FISHERY

The Eske Fishery was running at low levels until rain on Thursday night raised levels to give reasonable water in the river over the weekend. The fishery was quiet with no visiting rods fishing due to the fishery being closed to salmon angling. We are awaiting the first decent runs of sea trout into the Lough when we should have a number of anglers venturing out. This usually occurs on a good flood at the end of July. ‘Watch this space’.

EANY FISHERY

The Eany ran at very low levels until Thursday evening when heavy rain swelled the river to give a good flood reading 1.40 metres at its highest. It had been so low for so low long that this was a very dirty flood and the river was unfishable until Friday morning. Unfortunately, no visiting rods fished this day! The river then dropped until a small fresh (0.40 metres) on Sunday. The gauge average for the week read 0.40 metres. 9 visiting rods fished for the week. On Sunday Dimitrios Kandiotos and Andrew Jones caught a salmon apiece and I am awaiting details of the same. Also I have on record a salmon of 10lb 2oz caught from the Fish Counter Pools by Dimitrios on the 21st June in low water on a worm. At the time of writing (3rd July) there is good rain and good water levels in the river so prospects are looking good.

OWENEA FISHERY

The Owenea ran at low levels for all week until a small fresh on Friday (0.25 metres) which had dropped slightly by Saturday. On Sunday there was another small flood of 0.27 metres. The gauge average for the week read 0.19 metres. Only 15 visiting rods fished for the week with 9 of these fishing on Sunday. I am still awaiting details of catches on Sunday. On Friday, Alan Watson caught a lovely 12lb salmon from Brian’s Pool on beat 8 on the fly which he sportingly released. T. Irvine recorded 2 small grilse from beat 8 on the same day releasing both of these.

At the time of writing there is a good flood and the river is still rising. Prospects look good for the coming week.

Coarse angling Report

04 July 2007

Last week Jason Taylor, Northampton , one of his three angling friends returned from a weeks holiday in Killeshandra. They reported that the fishing was generally good. The best and most consistant venue they had was the Town lake close to Killeshanda, with mixed bags between 40lb - 65lb consisting of roach to a pound and a half, bream to 5lb and hybrids to 4lb 12oz. They also took good weights of roach, hybrids and the odd tench from Glass House.

Three Welsh anglers staying with Patricia Mundy, Deredis, Butlersbridge have been having a fantastic week’s fishing in the Butlersbridge area using a boat on Urney Lake and Rivory.
