Salmon and trout angling | Coarse angling
Monday 18th to Sunday 24th June 2007.
Angling has been fairly good this week on the Drowes despite the fishery running at low summer levels all week and relatively few rods fishing. Some decent rain is still being prayed for. The fishery was fairly quiet with most of the rods that were fishing being anglers that were staying in the Fishery Cottages. The grilse arrived in numbers this week however and there were numerous reports of catches. Most of the grilse were from 3 to 4lb. Given here are a number of the catches.
At the start of the week, Steven O’Neill accounted for a 4½lb grilse caught on a prawn. John Wilshaw’s party recorded 5 grilse for the week caught by various methods. Bob Marsh recorded 2 grilse caught on Wednesday and Friday. Jim Atkinson accounted for a 3lb grilse caught on a shrimp on Saturday. On Sunday, Bernard McCullough recorded a 4lb grilse caught on a spinner from the Money Pool.
Trout angling on Lough Melvin this week was been fairly good once again with good numbers of sonaghan recorded from all over the Lough. The best areas for sonaghan angling were Farrell’s Bay, Maguire’s Island, Bilberry Island and Rossinver Bay and the School House drifts. The Rossinver Fishery held a fly fishing competition on Sunday. This was won by James Doherty with 7 fish. In second place was Jonny Ray with 5 fish and third place was a tie between two anglers with 4 fish apiece. The salmon fishing was fairly quiet with very little angling effort. Terry Bradley recorded a 3lb grilse caught from the Rossinver Fishery on a Green Peter. The good run of grilse into the Drowes River should hopefully equate into a raised catch on the Lough if a few more anglers fish for the same.
The Eske Fishery remained at low summer levels all week with no meaningful rain to raise levels on the Lough and River. One visiting American Angler, Thomas Gyory, fished the Lough on Wednesday recording some 10 brown trout to 1¾lb caught on the wet flies. A wet, red bodied daddy longlegs accounted for most of the fish.
The Eany had very little water for the week once again as the extremely low gauge average of 0.07 metres shows. 4 visiting rods fished for the week and I have no reports of salmon caught, only 3lb rainbow trout which are inhabiting the lower reaches of the river having escaped from fish farms once again!
The Owenea River ran at very low to low levels all week with the gauge never rising above 0.15 metres. The gauge average for the week read a low 0.13 metres. 14 visiting rods fished for the week, 10 of these fishing over the Friday and Saturday when unfortunately the river was at its lowest. I have no reports as yet of fish caught this week but a couple of fish from previous weeks. On the 3rd, Andy McMenamin caught a 5½lb grilse from Billy’s Pool on beat 8 on the worm. On the 14th, Michael Redmond caught a 4½lb grilse from Brian’s Pool on beat 8 on the fly. !We remain praying for decent rain!
