Salmon and trout angling | Coarse angling
Monday 14th to Sunday 20th May 2007
The Drowes received rain towards the weekend which raised the river by some 6 inches. Although not a big flood, it was enough to really get fish moving. The fishery was fairly quiet during the week but the weekend was busy with good numbers of anglers fishing. The river fished well, particularly at the weekend when some 20 salmon were caught. Given here are some of the recorded catches. Sean Keane had a good day on Wednesday with 2 fine salmon of 15lb & 16lb caught on a General Practitioner fly from the Crooked Hole and the Mill Pool. On Saturday, Hugh Clarke recorded a 9lb fish caught on the spinner from the Blackwater. On Sunday, Colin Gardner accounted for a 9lb salmon caught from the Sea Pools on a fly. Jim Atkinson recorded a 7lb fish caught from the Blackwater on a fly. Marty King recorded another 7lb fish caught from the Washstones on a shrimp. Tom White accounted for a 10lb salmon caught from the Meadow on the fly.
Few anglers were fishing Lough Melvin this week once again despite good numbers of salmon now present in the lough. On Tuesday, 2 English Anglers guided by Martin O’Shea accounted for 2 grilse weighing 4 & 5lb caught trolling.
The river dropped from fair levels on Monday to lowish levels by Wednesday but heavy rain that night led to a good flood on Thursday which continued through to the end of the week. The fishery was quiet with no visiting anglers fishing this week. With the salmon fishing closed for the season and the main sea trout not beginning for a month or so, angling is for mainly brown trout at present.
The Owenea was running at fairly low levels up until Thursday when we received a good flood (0.50 metres). The continued rain ensured good water right through to Sunday. The gauge average for the week was good reading 0.33 metres. 13 visiting anglers fished for the week. We are still awaiting news of the capture of first salmon of the season however.

The change in the weather seems to have had a significant effect on the catches being reported to us. Pike anglers report poor angling for the last few days. Meanwhile Flynn's Pass at the Leprechaun Chair has been pretty good with 40/50lb of fish being caught including some Bream. Garadice and Killykeen are giving mixed bags with plenty of Tench and Roach. Plenty of small fish being caught on the Dromore River.
