Salmon and trout reports

By Lindsey Clarke

Monday 27th August to Sunday 2nd September 2007.

RIVER DROWES

The Drowes was quiet this week with only 2 visiting English rods staying in the Fishery Cottages and few other anglers fishing the River despite fair water levels. There was one grilse reported weighing 4lb caught at the weekend from the Mill Pool on worm.

LOUGH MELVIN

Lough Melvin continues to fish very well for trout with good catches of Sonaghan reported from the deeps and around the river mouths. Fly pattern does not seem to be important once feeding fish have been located, with various patterns accounting for fish. Noel Casey from Sligo caught a fabulous trout weighing 11lb 11oz from Farrell’s Bay on the fly. The fish took a Golden Dabbler on the top dropper and took 1½ hours to land, by which time the boat had drifted to Roosky Point!

Melvin trout

Salmon fishing was quiet with few anglers venturing out for the same and consequently no reported catches.

EANY FISHERY

The Eany ran at low levels until Friday when the river slowly rose to give a big flood of 1.10 metres by 5pm. Saturday and Sunday also gave good floods (0.68 & 0.90 metres). The gauge average for the week read 0.48 metres. The fishery was understandably busy with 42 visiting rods fishing, 20 of these on Sunday.

Despite some good conditions, the salmon seemed dour at times and did not give themselves up readily. Given here are some of the catches. On Thursday, Gregory Campbell accounted for a 3½lb grilse caught on worm from Bonnyglen Falls. On Friday, Alan Cully recorded a 6lb grilse caught from Bonnyglen on the spinner. Jed Cole accounted for 2 grilse caught at Bonnyglen on worm. Mickey McLoughlin recorded 4 salmon caught on the spinner with 2 released. The fish weighed 3½, 5, 6 & 8lb 14oz and were caught from The Devlin, Ballymacahill Bridge and the Eanybeg. William Bustard recorded a 3½lb grilse caught from Ballymacahill Br. on a spinner. On Saturday, John McLaughlin accounted for a 3lb grilse caught on the fly but lost another 3 fish. John O’Connor recorded a small grilse caught on the fly from Limm-na-Mhille. Tommy Burns recorded a 7lb fish caught from the Devlin on fly. Andrew Lennox landed a 4lb grilse on a spinner. On Sunday, Kevin McCrossan recorded 2 grilse caught and released on the fly. The fish weighed 3 & 4lb and were caught from The Luggies and Limm-na-Mhille. Mark Pavis accounted for a small grilse caught on the spinner from the Junction Pool. Gerry McCafferty recorded 2 grilse caught on the fly releasing one of these. The fish were caught from Letterbarra and weighed 6 & 8lb. Ron Dunlop recorded a 5lb grilse caught on the fly and Jim Foster a 5lb grilse caught on the worm from Ballymacahill Br.

OWENEA FISHERY

The Owenea was running at low levels until a small flood on Thursday. Friday, Saturday & Sunday gave high water conditions and the river did not really drop to more desirable levels. The gauge average for the week read 0.28 metres. There were 37 visiting rods fishing over the week with most of these fishing at the weekend. There are great numbers of salmon in the fishery now, but catches did not seem to reflect this and I would of expected a higher return. This month often sees the fish being very dour. Alan Watson recorded a 3½lb grilse caught on the fly form beat 9 on Monday. William Bustard recorded a small grilse caught on the spinner from the Gubbin on beat 5 on Friday. On Saturday, Otmar Butz accounted for a 4½lb grilse caught from Jack’s Stream on beat 7 on the fly. On Sunday, Kevin O’Neill recorded a 5lb grilse caught from the Battery on beat 6 on the fly.
