Salmon and trout reports

By Lindsey Clarke

Monday 10th to Sunday 16th September 2007.

RIVER DROWES

The Drowes was fairly quiet this week. Anglers renting the Fishery Cottages made up the greater part of the rods fishing. There was good water towards the weekend with the high levels of rainfall we received towards the end of the week. At present there is plenty of water in the river and this will ensure good levels for the week to come (no more rain would be desirable!). There were a number of fish recorded at the weekend. A French party consisting of 5 rods recorded 4 grilse to 8lb caught over the weekend on fly and spinner. Mr Morrow accounted for grilse of 6 & 7lb over the weekend caught on the shrimp.

LOUGH MELVIN

Lough Melvin was fairly quiet again this week with few rods fishing for trout or salmon and as such there is little to report!

EANY FISHERY

The Eany ran at low summer levels except for a small fresh (0.30m) on Friday but on Sunday we received a huge flood reading 2.80 metres on the gauge! This was probably the biggest flood for ten years and it was hard to find the river, which was unfishable. The gauge average for the week read 0.55 meters which gives a false indication of levels due to the big flood, and certainly there was not a day with desirable levels. 24 visiting rods were fishing for the week with 11 of these fishing on Sunday. Most anglers on Sunday had left the river by 11am when the trees started passing them! Due to the low water and then unfishable flood, we have no salmon recorded to date. There were good numbers of salmon caught on the Monday (see next week’s reports).

OWENEA FISHERY

The Owenea River ran at fairly low levels all week until Sunday when there was a big flood of 0.70 metres which was virtually unfishable. The gauge average for the week read 0.25 metres. 37 visiting anglers were fishing for the week spread throughout the week. At present I have only one fish in the book. This was a 4lb grilse caught by visiting French Angler Pierre Rumeau on the fly from beat 9 on Monday.
