Salmon and trout angling | Coarse angling

Monday 24th to Sunday 30th September 2007
Well that’s it. Another salmon and trout angling season passes us bye. Boo Hoo. This one seems to have gone particularly quickly!
There was good water this week on the Drowes and good numbers of salmon caught by anglers staying in the Fishery Cottages. A group of Swiss Anglers staying at Lareen caught 12 grilse for the week averaging 5½lb releasing 6 of these. A Mr Walters recorded an 8lb fish caught on the spinner from the Blackwater. One visiting German Angler recorded 5 grilse for the week weighing from 5 to 6lb caught on the fly.
Lough Melvin was quiet this week and for those that ventured out the fishing was poor with trout very hard to rise. There was no salmon angling effort.
There was a big flood on Monday reading 1.40 metres which gave nice water on Tuesday. The river then dropped over the week to low summer levels by Saturday but we received a nice flood for the last day of the season reading 1.15 metres which meant the river was in good condition for the evening. The gauge average for the week read 0.64 metres. 32 visiting rods fished for the week with the majority of these fishing on Tuesday. Surprisingly, we only had 3 visiting rods fishing for the last day of the season!
There were a number of salmon caught on the Tuesday, details of which I am still awaiting. Kevin McCrossan recorded a 4lb grilse caught from the Eanybeg and lost a couple more. There was nothing caught after Tuesday with the river dropping to low levels until the last day when there were a number of salmon recorded. Gary McHugh caught and released a 5lb grilse on spinner. Fred Henry accounted for a 7lb fish which was released. I caught and released a 3lb grilse on fly from the Eanybeg and lost 2 more.
And that was it! We couldn’t believe that another season had passed us by so quickly. The annual ‘closing of the fishery’ ceremony was held at around 7pm at Ballymacahill Bridge with food and drink aplenty and the usual fireworks as the dark descended.
The Owenea received a big flood on Monday which gave good water up to Wednesday. The river then dropped away to low levels by Saturday. On Sunday there was a big flood (0.50 metres) which meant the river was a little too high for angling on the last day of the season. The gauge average for the week read 0.33 metres. 25 visiting rods fished for the week. I am still awaiting details of fish caught.
