Salmon and trout reports

Monday 14th to Sunday 20th April 2008.

RIVER DROWES

Water levels were good over the week and the river continues to fish well. The weather still remained cold however and we are all waiting for the temperatures to rise and make angling a little more comfortable. The fishery was fairly quiet during the week with the weekend busier. A number of early grilse were also caught this week.

Good numbers of salmon were recorded and some of the catches are given here. On Tuesday, visiting Swiss angler, Walter Huldi recorded a 6lb fish caught on shrimp. On Wednesday, Tony Finley accounted for an 8½lb salmon caught on a size 8 cascade fly from the Mill Pool. Doyle Kennedy landed a 9lb fish on the shrimp from the Soft Hole. On Saturday, Columba Fitzpatrick recorded an 8½lb salmon caught from Tinker’s Hole on a worm. Francie Grimley accounted for an 8lb fish caught from The Meadow on a shrimp. Connor O’Connor recorded a 10lb salmon caught from the Blackwater on a stoats tail fly. On Sunday, Brian McEvoy recorded a 7½lb salmon caught from the Mill Pool on a spinner. Brian McClintock accounted for a 7lb fish caught on the fly from The Red Roof. Anthony Carty caught a 5½lb grilse from The Cascade on a worm. Roger McGahy recorded a 7½lb salmon caught from the Sea Pools on shrimp.

At present the gauge at the Four Masters Bridge is reading 5.5 and some rain is forecast for early this week which should ensure levels remain good in the river and temperatures are forecast to rise a little. Prospects look good.

LOUGH MELVIN

Conditions were variable once again on the Lough and temperatures remained low all week with winds mainly from an easterly direction. Not the best of conditions for angling! There would be a good deal more fishing if the weather was a little warmer. As such there has been little trout angling. A number of boats were out trolling for salmon.

On Wednesday, William Campbell recorded a 9lb 4oz salmon and John Parks and Melvin Schofield accounted for a fish of 8½lb. On Sunday, Stephen Kennedy accounted for a 9lb salmon and there was a further salmon caught along Garrison, of which I do not yet have details. The Rossinver fishery recorded a 7½lb salmon caught by Dessie McHugh on Monday and a fine 10lb salmon caught on the fly by Stephen Hey on Wednesday.

ERNE ESTUARY

The Estuary was fairly quiet with the cold temperatures and east winds making angling somewhat uncomfortable. For those anglers that did venture out however, angling was productive. There was some 25 sea trout caught and 2 anglers fishing sandeel from a boat recorded 11 and 7 fish apiece. Temperatures are forecast to rise somewhat over the week and the winds to be from, a more desirable westerly direction.

OWENEA FISHERY

The Owenea River Fishery ran at low levels for the week with the gauge reading only 0.17 metres on Monday and falling away to over the week to 0.11 metres by Sunday. Air temperatures still remained cold and the winds were mainly from an easterly direction. The gauge average for the week read a very low 0.13 metres. Only 2 visiting anglers fished for the week and we still await news of the first salmon to be caught.
