Salmon and trout reports

Monday 7th to Sunday 13th April 2008.

RIVER DROWES

Good numbers of salmon are entering the river. Water levels were good over the week and the river at present is at a lovely level, reading just under 6 on the gauge at the Four Masters Bridge. Despite the good conditions, the river was not particularly busy except for Saturday, when there were good numbers of anglers fishing. There were good numbers of salmon recorded for the week. On Wednesday, Alan Kendle recorded an 11lb salmon caught on shrimp. On Thursday, Joe Darragh accounted for an 8lb fish caught spinning. On Saturday, Columba Fitzpatrick recorded a 7½lb salmon caught on the worm. Derek Jermyn landed a 7½b fish from the Mill Pool caught on a spinner. Jim English caught and released a 9lb salmon on prawn. Brian Lawler caught and returned a 6lb fish from ‘The Meadow’. On Sunday, George McAteer landed and returned a 7lb salmon and Davy McDool accounted for a 7lb fish caught on a shrimp. Prospects look good for the coming week though there is still a cold bite to the air!

LOUGH MELVIN

Conditions were variable on the Lough and the temperature is still low on most days. The result seems to be sparse fly hatches and few anglers are venturing out for trout. The salmon fishing remains consistent with salmon entering the Lough all week. On Wednesday, John Parkson and Melvin Schofield recorded a salmon apiece caught on the troll. The fish weighed 8lb each. The following day Melvin accounted for another salmon weighing 7½lb. On Sunday I have four salmon recorded to date. Noel Johnson accounted for a 7lb fish, Greg Kilfeather landed a 10lb salmon and Melvin Schofield caught an 8lb salmon. Another salmon was also landed and I am awaiting details of the same. All fish were caught trolling.

ERNE ESTUARY

There seem to be good numbers of sea trout present in the estuary a present with 23 fish recorded to the few anglers who fished. All the trout are being caught on sandeel which is all that’s being fished at present. Michael Patton recorded 14 sea trout caught averaging 1¼lb with the best two at 2lb. prospects look good for the coming season.

OWENEA FISHERY

The Owenea River Fishery ran at low levels for the week with the gauge reading 0.25 metres on Monday and falling away gradually over the week. The gauge average for the week only read 0.18 metres. The fishery was quiet with no visiting rods fishing for the week.
