Salmon and trout angling | Coarse angling
Monday 25th to Sunday 31st August 2008.
There was rain this week in moderate amounts and this meant the river fell slowly over the week giving good water heights each day. The river is reading just below 6 on the gauge at the Four Masters Bridge at the time of writing. Despite the good conditions, the River was quiet this week with only a few visiting rods fishing. As a consequence there was only a small number of salmon reported caught. On Thursday, Mark Gilfoyle recorded a 5lb grilse caught on the fly. Dennis O’Toole recorded 4 grilse caught for the week. They weighed from 3 to 6lb and were caught on the fly.
Lough Melvin was quiet this week and there were only a small number of anglers out fishing for trout. The trout fishing remains sporadic with decent fish hard to find. It seems that no anglers were out fishing for salmon. The Rossinver Fishery was fairly quiet this week with few anglers venturing out. Large numbers of grilse are present in the Bay but are very dour and not interested in any offerings that anglers are providing!
With a fair amount of rain this week there were some good water heights on the Owenea giving good angling conditions at times. We received reasonable floods on Monday, Thursday and Sunday. The gauge average for the week was good reading 0.26 metres.
The fishery was reasonably busy with 72 visiting rods fishing for the week and there fair numbers of salmon recorded. On Monday, James Composton recorded a 4½lb grilse caught on the fly from beat 9. On Wednesday, Bart McHugh recorded a 4lb grilse caught from beat 9 on the spinner. William Foster accounted for 2 grilse caught on beat 8. These weighed 3 & 4lb and were caught on worm and fly from Bryan’s pool and Gallagher’s Stream. Jim Laffin also recorded 2 grilse form the same beat weighing 5 & 6lb caught on the fly from Gavigan’s Pool and Gallagher’s Stream. On Thursday, Gareth Hughes recorded a 4½lb grilse caught from the Battery on beat 6 on the spinner. Gordon Young accounted for a 4½lb grilse caught from beat 8 on the fly. On Sunday, Tommy Irvine recorded a fine 9lb grilse caught from beat 8 on a spinner. John Breslin accounted for a 6½lb grilse caught from beat 6 on the spinner. Jim Laffin accounted for a 7lb grilse caught from beat on the fly and William Foster recorded a 4lb grilse caught from the same beat on the spinner.
There was plenty of rainfall this week and the Eany received a number of floods over the week and was either rising or falling for the whole week. The biggest flood which read 1.20 metres on the gauge occurred on Monday. The rest of the week brought good water conditions if you could time your fishing when the river was falling between floods. The gauge average for the week was high reading 0.73 metres.
Despite the good water levels, the fishery was not particularly busy with only 28 visiting rods fishing for the week.
There is a fair head of salmon in the fishery at present and there were fair numbers of salmon caught for the week. Given here are some of the catches for the week. On Monday, Gus Scullion and Ciaran Scullion recorded grilse of 8lb and 5lb respectively, caught from Bonnyglen Falls on worm. Gerry O’Neill accounted for a 3lb grilse caught in the Flag Pool which he returned. Damien O’Donnell recorded 3 grilse caught. The fish weighed 2, 4½ and 6½lb. Two were caught on the spinner and one on the fly from Bonnyglen Falls, Burn’s Falls and the Fish Counter Pool. On Sunday, Gerry O’Neill landed a small grilse caught on the spinner from Burn’s Falls and Alistair Proctor also accounted for a small grilse caught on the fly.
