Salmon and trout angling | Coarse angling
Monday 28th January to Sunday 3rd February 2008
Angling conditions have been fairly poor on the river this week with the river running at very high levels and at present, nearly in the fields. Allied to this was the horrible weather which brought gale force winds, rain, sleet and snow. Altogether, very unpleasant angling conditions! As a result, there were few anglers fishing over the week and no reported catch to date although one angler lost 2 fresh spring salmon on Saturday.
Lough Melvin opened on Friday (1st February) but only within the Republic (see below). Angling conditions were very poor however with the lough at very high levels, strong winds gusting to gale force, rain, sleet and snow. Only 2 young anglers fished on Friday and 2 boats were out on Saturday. I have no reports of catches.
Normally there would be a strong contingent of anglers fishing out of Garrison for the start of the season but at present the section of the Lough in County Fermanagh (N. Ireland) remains closed for legal reasons. The trustees who oversee the fishing rites for the tenants (of the former Ely Estate) have changed solicitors and as yet, new leases for the Garrison and Lough Melvin Angling Association have not yet been signed. Hopefully, this will be resolved fairly promptly.
no report
