Salmon and trout angling | Coarse angling
Monday 19th May to Sunday 1st June 2008 (2 weeks)
The dry, warm and sunny weather continued once again for the whole fortnight and winds remained from an easterly direction. This all meant that the river continued to remain at very low summer levels and there were very few visiting rods fishing except for the anglers booked into the Fishery Cottages. Despite the very poor conditions, there were a number of salmon caught. On the 19th, Jim Atkinson recorded a 3lb grilse caught on the fly from the Blackwater. He recorded a further fish on the 22nd, a 9lb salmon caught on the fly from the Old Sea Pool. On the 25th, Joset Picrra accounted for a 3lb grilse caught on the fly and on the 29th a 6lb grilse was recorded, caught from Sandy on a Toby spinner by a visiting French angler. There is some rain forecast for the coming week which should, hopefully, see conditions improve.
The dry sunny weather continued on Lough Melvin over the fortnight and the water levels on the Lough fell to very low levels indeed. Mayflies have been hatching but with virtually unbroken sunshine and winds remaining from an easterly direction fishing has been difficult for the greater part. There were decent catches of trout (mainly sonaghan) on some days and these were mostly in the late evening after 8pm. Few ventured out for salmon and I have no reports of salmon caught for the fortnight.
The Erne Estuary has fished well this week with good numbers of sea trout caught despite the very bright conditions and easterly winds. There were also some very big trout caught on sand eel and released up to 6lb in weight.
There has been no rainfall on the Owenea and the river ran at extremely low water levels for the two weeks. The river is as low as it can go at present! The gauge average for the fortnight was the virtually the lowest possible reading 0.06 metres! Unsurprisingly, the river was very quiet with only one visiting rod fishing over the fortnight.

Alan Watson recorded a 9¾lb salmon caught from Doherty’s Pool
On a brighter note, we have our first salmon of the season recorded despite the unfavourable conditions. Local angler Alan Watson recorded a 9¾lb salmon caught from Doherty’s Pool on beat 9 on the 22nd. The fish fell to a small John Anthony shrimp fly. (See attached photo).
