Salmon and trout reports

Monday 16th to Sunday 22nd June 2008

River Drowse

Once again the Drowes ran at very low levels all week with no meaningful rainfall to lift the river and spirits. Consequently there was very little angling taking place and no reported catch of salmon.

LOUGH MELVIN

Reports from Lough Melvin were variable once again this week and the Lough remains at very low levels. The overall picture seems to be that fishing was ‘hard work’ during the daytime and the best catches were in the evenings after 8pm. These consisted of mainly sonaghan that were caught on wet flies. At present there are good numbers of mayfly hatching at a number of locations, though the trout seem indifferent to this fact! With the Lough at such low levels there were only a few boats out fishing for salmon. The Lough and the River need a ‘good dose’ of water to raise levels for the grilse to run into the Lough. There were, surprisingly, some fresh grilse showing in the Lough though numbers of fresh fish can not be high until a good flood arrives.

On Saturday the 2nd Denis McSharry Memorial Cup competition was held by the Rossinver Melvin Angling Club. This was fished by 92 anglers in 46 boats. The fishing was difficult with only 63 trout caught. The outright winner was Jackie Mahon junior with 5 trout for 1.465kg. In second place came Francie White with 3 fish for 1.045kg and in third place was Pauric Traynor with 3 fish for 0.955kg.

ERNE ESTUARY

The Estuary was fairly quiet with only a few anglers fishing over the week. There were a number of sea trout by varying methods caught though it seems these were fairly small.

OWENEA FISHERY

The Owenea Fishery ran at very low levels this week until a flood (at last!) on Sunday which read 0.28 metres on the gauge. The flood was not particularly big and was very dirty, as would be expected, but was much needed. This should have allowed any fish lying in the estuary to ascend the river. The gauge average for the week read 0.10 metres. There were only two visiting rods fishing for the week and both fished on Sunday. I have yet to receive news of any catches.

EANY FISHERY

The Eany River, once again, ran at very low levels all week with the exception of Sunday when there was a flood at last reading 0.82 metres on the gauge. This raised the gauge average for the week to 0.21 metres. The flood came late in the day and was, understandably, very dirty. This meant that nobody fished on the Sunday or indeed for the rest of the week so there is little to report as regards angling catches!
