Salmon and trout angling | Coarse angling
Monday 17th to Sunday 23rd March 2008.
Fishing is really picking up on the Drowes. There was a good run of fish into the fishery and good numbers of salmon recorded. On Monday, John Carty recorded a 10lb salmon caught on the spinner. On Wednesday, Sean McAniece and John Doherty recorded a 9lb salmon apiece caught spinning. Finton Delaney accounted for an 8½lb fish caught on the fly and John Scott landed a 10lb salmon caught on a white Flying ‘C’. On Saturday Marty O’Hara recorded a 10lb salmon caught on shrimp. Stephen Hooper and Marty King recorded salmon of 8 & 9lb respectively caught on shrimp and there was another salmon of 10lb recorded caught on the fly from Lennox’s Bridge. On Sunday, Brian McClintock recorded a 7lb fish caught on the fly and Gary Morrow a fish of 8lb caught on the shrimp from the ‘Moneyhole’.
A number of anglers were fishing Lough Melvin over the week though the fishery was not particularly busy. Weather conditions were variable with winds coming generally from various directions, and some sun and rain. The only unchanging aspect of the weather was that it was cold still. The Lough was also still very high.
A number of salmon were recorded. On Friday, Melvin Schofield recorded a 9lb salmon caught on the troll. In the Rossinver Fishery, Jim Connelly recorded a 7½lb salmon caught on a Garry Dog fly on Saturday. The following day Jim Hoye accounted for a 9lb salmon caught on the fly (a yellow mayfly!). There were good numbers of sonaghan caught all over the Lough from the shallows although it will be a month or so until they are in peak condition. The sonaghan do not overwinter as well as the gillaroo which feed on molluscs through the close season. The gillaroo however, seem to be notable by their absence in catches for some reason!
