Salmon and trout angling | Coarse angling
Monday 24th to Sunday 30th March 2008.
Angling remains very good on the Drowes with the river falling nicely over the week from fairly high levels. There were good numbers of salmon caught over the week. On Wednesday, Stephen Smith recorded a 9lb salmon caught on the fly from ‘Briney’s’ and David Hardinen also recorded a 9lb fish. Kevin Ennis accounted for a 7½lb salmon caught on the fly. On Thursday, Keith Gardiner recorded a 7lb fish caught on a flying ‘C’ and Noel Gilhooly landed an 8lb salmon on the fly from ‘The Meadows’. On Saturday, David Olphert recorded an 8lb salmon caught on the fly and Ryan McGurdy a 7lb fish on the fly. On Sunday, James Stewart accounted for a 10½lb salmon caught on a red flying ‘C’ and Helen McLoughlin caught on spinner and released a 10½lb salmon. Angling looks set to be good over the coming week with the river dropping away nicely.
Catches of sonaghan have been good over the Lough in the shallows though the fish are still somewhat thin. Another few weeks will see them fighting fit! The Gillaroo seem difficult to catch probably due to the cold conditions and sparse insect hatches.
In the Rossinver Fishery, Raymond Dundas recorded a 7lb salmon caught trolling a Yellow Belly. There were fair numbers of sonaghan trout caught.
There were a number of sea trout caught mainly at the weekend on sandeel. To date there are some 50 sea trout caught down the estuary ranging in size from 1lb to 3lb.
