Salmon and trout reports

Monday 12th to Sunday 18th May 2008.

RIVER DROWES

The dry, warm and sunny weather continued all week and the winds remained from an easterly direction for the most part. With no rainfall the river ran at low summer levels. This all meant that there were very few rods out fishing and no salmon recorded to date. We require some rainfall to raise water levels. At present, the outlook is for showers during the latter half of the week with the weekend becoming dry again. This should hopefully lift water levels and improve angling chances though the winds are forecast to remain from an easterly direction.

LOUGH MELVIN

The weather on Melvin was dry and sunny with winds from an easterly direction. This meant that few anglers ventured out on the Lough for salmon. An 8lb salmon was caught on Wednesday by Gerry Higgins, but there is little else to report. The trout fishing was quiet also. There was just the odd mayfly hatching over the week which means the main hatch should start soon. This should improve the trout angling.

ERNE ESTUARY

There were a number of trout caught on the estuary this week though few anglers were fished due to the very bright conditions and easterly winds!

OWENEA FISHERY

The Owenea was very quiet this week. With the river remaining at very low levels all week, there were no rods fishing! The gauge average for the week read a very low, 0.08 metres.

Coarse angling Report

21 May 2008

Some English anglers staying at Kingfisher Lodge Lough Gowna report good Tench and some Bream up to 7lb on Lisney. They also report good bags of hybrids.

There are not many anglers this week in the Cootehill area but those who have been fishing it report good catches of Trout and Tench at Bairds Shore also some nice Bream on the Dromore River at Haughtons.

Rockfield at Killeshandra has been giving good mixed bags, meanwhile plenty of Perch and Roach are being bagged in the Killeshandra area. Rann is also giving good bags of fish.

Pike fishing remains good in most areas.
