Salmon and trout reports

Monday 15th to Sunday 21st September 2008.

RIVER DROWES

Overall the Drowes fell over the week and, at present, is reading 5 on the gauge at the Four Masters Bridge. The fishery was very quiet and few rods were out fishing over the week and so there is little to report. On Saturday, Stephen Hooper recorded a 6lb grilse caught on the shrimp from the Moneypool. The fish was released.

LOUGH MELVIN

The salmon fishing was very quiet this week on Melvin this week with very little angling effort for the same. The trout fishing picked up this week on Lough Melvin however. Anglers reported good catches of sonaghan on wet flies throughout the week from numerous locations around the lough. Good catches were taken around the river mouths with fish beginning to congregate prior to them running up river to their spawning grounds. Various fly patterns were successful. When the sonaghan are taking they are not overly fussed with regards to fly pattern.

The Rossinver Fishery held their end of season club competition at the weekend. This was won by Terry McGovern, Garrison with 5 trout caught. In second place was Jim Connelly with 2 trout. Francis Feely and Matthew Fergusson were placed 3rd and 4th respectively with a fish apiece.

The Kinlough Anglers also hosted their end of season competition with all proceeds raised being donated to charity. Jackie Mahon of Abbey Foods donated all the food for the Barbeque afterwards and the competitors fished for a new cup this year. This was the Lenighan Cup which was kindly donated to the club by the Lenighan family. The competition was won by Darren Maguire, Garrison with 7 trout caught. In second place was Dermott Lenighan with 4 trout. In 3rd, 4th and 5th place respectively with 3 trout apiece were James Doherty, Howard Black and James Lenighan. The weather remained fine for the evening and the BBQ and celebrations were enjoyed by all.

OWENEA FISHERY

There were variable water levels throughout the week on the Owenea. Monday and Tuesday gave good levels (0.29 & 0.24m). The water then fell away over Wednesday and Thursday until a small flood on Thursday night gave fair levels on Friday (0.24m). The onset of dry weather then saw water levels fall over the weekend towards low levels. The fishery was reasonably well attended for the time of the season with 34 visiting rods fishing for the week. There were a number of salmon caught but at present I only have details of three fish caught. On Monday, regular visitor Bill Murray recorded a 4lb grilse caught on the fly from beat 5. On Tuesday, Gordon Young recorded a 5lb grilse caught on the spinner from beat 8. On Saturday, Paul Doherty landed a 3lb grilse caught from beat 7 on the fly. The forecast is for dry sunny weather for the coming week so it looks as if we will receive little rainfall to raise water levels.

EANY FISHERY

Water levels varied throughout the week on the Eany. There were floods on Monday (0.62m), Tuesday (0.50m) and Friday (0.84m). With the onset of dry weather on Saturday, the river began to drop and by Sunday the gauge was only reading 0.20m. The gauge average for the week was good reading 0.47 metres. The fishery was not particularly busy with 22 visiting rods fishing for the week. There were a number of salmon caught but at present I only have details of three fish caught. On Thursday, Fred Henry recorded a 7lb grilse caught on the spinner from the Flag Pool. On Friday, Andy Lennox recorded a 4lb 12oz grilse caught from the Junction Pool on a spinner and John McCloskey accounted for a 5lb grilse caught on the spinner from Ballymacahill Bridge pool. The coming week is forecast to be dry and sunny so we are not expecting much in the way of floods. The non angling fraternity seem to happy about this though!
