Monday 24th to Sunday 30th August 2009
The Drowes ran at high levels over the week rising slightly as the week progressed to read 7.5 on the gauge by Sunday evening. The fishery was quiet overall but those that did fish recorded a number of salmon over the week. On Wednesday, Colm McCormack caught and released a 7lb fish on a Cascade fly from The Cascades. Marty King recorded 2 fish caught on shrimp from the Washstones weighing 6 & 8lb releasing both of these. On Friday, Robert Flanagan accounted for a 9lb salmon caught on a Flying ‘C’ from The Meadow. On Saturday, Marty King recorded 3 more fish caught on shrimp weighing 6, 8 & 12lb. These were caught from The Sand Hole and returned. On Sunday, Frank Doherty recorded a 5lb grilse caught from the Turn Hole on a Mourne Gold fly and Adrian Mcgrane landed a 6lb fish from The Blackwater on a tube fly.
The rain is forecast to continue so the river should remain at fair levels over the week.

The week brought plenty of rain and wind on the Lough this week and added to the trout being somewhat contrary, trout angling proved difficult at times. Most boats came in with only two or three trout for their days fishing. It seems no anglers ventured forth after salmon. Garrison Anglers held their annual 4 day trout fly boat competition. This was fished by 360 competitors with the Thursday, Friday and Saturday being qualifying days for the final on Sunday. The fishing was hard at times and the weather somewhat inclement at times. The fishing was fairly good on Thursday and it took 3 plus fish to qualify. On Friday, 1 fish qualified a boat and the fishing was difficult due to very strong winds. Most nets were used for catching caps and hats rather than fish! If somebody had been selling headgear at the jetty that evening he would have done a roaring trade! The weather settled a little on Saturday and 2 plus fish were required to qualify. The fishing was fair on the final day. The competition was won by Brian Bingham (Magherafelt) and Gerry Duffy (Castleblaney). They weighed in three sonaghan and a fine 3lb trout which saw them win a boat apiece and some Belleek china/crystal. In Second place were Gerry Timoney (Garrison) and Tom Winters (London) with five trout. They each won a cheque for £700. In third place came Eddie Hart (Ballysadare) and Jim Condron with five trout who each won and electric outboard engine complete with battery.
The week was wet once again and we received a number of floods. In fact the river was too high too fish during periods. The gauge average for the week was high, reading 0.79 metres. The fishery was fairly quiet with only 25 visiting rods fishing for the week. To date I only have a small number of salmon recorded in the register. The best fish of the week was a fine 14lb 14oz salmon caught by Gerry McCafferty on the fly from Limm-na-Mhille on the Eanymore on Wednesday. On Sunday, Emma Scullion accounted for a 3lb grilse caught from Bonnyglen Falls on worm.
The forecast is for more showery weather so I would expect some fair conditions in the coming week once again.

The wet week ensured that there were numerous floods over the week and in fact the river was higher than would be desired on a number of occasions. Everyday brought a flood except the weekend when the river had a chance to drop but still giving fair conditions up to the lowest reading for the week 0.20 metres on Sunday. The gauge average for the week was very high reading 0.37 metres. The fishery was busy with 96 visiting rods fishing over the week.
There were a fair number of salmon recorded over the week and given here are some of the catches.
On Monday, Brian Smith recorded a 3½lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 7. Michael McLaughlin accounted for a 9lb salmon caught on the fly from beat 6. On Tuesday, Bill Hutchison recorded a 5lb grilse caught on the spinner from beat 8. Pierre Rumeau recorded two grilse caught weighing 4 & 6lb caught on spinner and fly from beat 6. On Wednesday he recorded two further grilse to 3½lb caught on the fly from beat 5. Mr Gillespie accounted for a 7lb fish caught from beat 7 on a spinner. Paul Brennan landed a 7lb grilse from beat 8 on a spinner. Aiden Whelan recorded a 6lb grilse caught on a spinner. On Thursday, Kevin O’Neill recorded two grilse weighing 4 & 6lb caught from beat 6 on the fly. John Partridge accounted for a 5lb grilse caught on the fly from beat 7. On Saturday, Mick Martin recorded two grilse caught from beats 5 & 9 on the fly weighing 5lb each. On Sunday, Mick recorded another grilse caught on the fly from beat 9 weighing 5lb and John Boyle accounted for a 4lb grilse caught on the fly.
The forecast is for more rainfall and the river should have some excellent water levels over the coming week. Prospects look good once again.

Monday 17th to Sunday 23rd August 2009
Due to heavy rain over the week, the Drowes rose constantly from 6 on the gauge to read 7 by Sunday evening. This level is a little higher than desirable but certainly will not worry the salmon! The run of grilse continued though there were few of these fish that figured in the catches. The fishery was fairly quiet with only a limited number of visiting rods fishing. The season ticket holders seemed to be recording most fish caught and a good number of these were coloured fish caught over the weekend. Rob Flanagan recorded a 4lb grilse caught on Saturday. On Sunday, Gary Morrow accounted for two grilse on the shrimp which were released. Darren Kennedy also landed two grilse on shrimp returning both of these. Chris Sinclair recorded three grilse caught on shrimp releasing all of these.
For info/bookings etc on the Drowes Fishery & Lough Melvin see www.drowessalmonfishery.com or Tel: 071 9841055.
It seems that there was little or no effort on the salmon fishing front. The run of salmon continued and a number of trout anglers reported seeing fresh salmon showing in the Lough. Trout catches were variable on Lough Melvin this week. Some anglers reported that trout were hard to rise and the going tough and others were happy with their days fishing reporting up to 8 decent sonaghan per boat. The deeps off Bilberry and the drifts off Garrison were where all the better catches were reported. All fish were taken on various patterns of wet fly. The Garrison Anglers held a local boat competition over the weekend. This was won by Matt Brown & Sean Ragdale with 4 good sonaghan. In second place were Stuart McCart & Arden Pollack with 5 fish. Joe Gilroy & James Doherty came third with 4 fish. One angler nearly won everything when he hooked a 10lb plus trout which he unfortunately lost after having the fish at the net twice!
There was plenty of rain this week and the river had a big flood every day except for Saturday. The gauge average for the week was extremely high reading 1.33 metres! The fishery was not particularly busy with 30 visiting rods fishing for the week, 9 of these on Saturday. Salmon ran on each day of the week but numbers are well down on what we expect for this time of the season. It seems to be the same story on a number of other fisheries regionally and nationally. All very worrying! There were a number of fish caught over the week but catches are far below what we expect for this time of year. On Tuesday, visiting French angler Pierre Rumeau recorded a 6lb grilse caught on the fly. John Wilson accounted for a 3½lb grilse caught on the fly from the Eanybeg. On Wednesday, Gerry O’Neill landed two grilse weighing around 3lb from Burn’s Falls on a spinner. Patsy McHugh landed a fine 12lb salmon. The fish was caught on a spinner from The Luggies. The following day, Patsy accounted for two grilse caught from the Wood Pool on a fly. The fish weighed 4 & 8lb.
The forecast is for more showery weather but with lower amounts of rainfall so I would expect some fair conditions in the coming week.

The Owenea was in flood every day with the river being too high for comfortable fishing on a number of occasions. The gauge average for the week was very high reading 0.38 metres. The fishery was reasonably well attended with 70 visiting rods fishing over the week. The good run of grilse continued this week with a good number of anglers reporting seeing many salmon running up the fishery though the fish were not easy to tempt (what’s new!).
There were good numbers of salmon recorded over the week and one angler caught five salmon. I am awaiting details of the captor etc. Most fish were caught from beat 8. Given here are some of the catches for the week. On Monday, Paul McGill recorded a 4½lb grilse caught from Billy’s Pool on beat 8 on the fly. Billy Blair recorded the best salmon of the week. The fish weighed 15lb and was caught from McGill’s Long Pool on beat 8 on the spinner. Finn McCrory accounted for a 4½lb grilse caught on the fly from beat 8. One local recorded a 5lb grilse caught on the fly from The Gubbin on beat 5. On Wednesday, Billy Blair recorded a further fish weighing 5lb caught on the spinner from beat 8. Hugh Mooney recorded two grilse weighing 5 & 6lb caught from Boyle’s Pool on beat 9 on the spinner. Kevin O’Neill accounted for a 5½lb grilse caught from beat 5 on the fly. Jim Foster landed a 3lb grilse on the spinner from beat 6. On Friday, Fin McCrory caught a small grilse on the fly from beat 8. James Madden had a good day recording three grilse to 5lb caught on the fly from Bryan’s Pool on beat 8, On Saturday, Chris Gallagher accounted for two grilse weighing 3 & 4lb caught from beat 8 on the worm. On Sunday, Johnathon McCorkhill recorded a 3lb grilse caught from beat 8 on a spinner.
More rain is forecast for the coming week though the showers are not meant to be as heavy which should there will be some nice water levels this week. Prospects look good.

Monday 10th to Sunday 16th August 2009.
Rain over the week ensured that water levels on the Drowes rose and by Sunday the gauge was reading 6. The rise in levels encouraged the grilse to continue running and there were a number of fish recorded over the week. On Monday, Andy Ward recorded a 3½lb grilse caught on a cascade fly. Jim English accounted for a 4½lb grilse caught from the Sea Pools on the fly. On Wednesday, Noel Blaney recorded 2 grilse caught on worm from the Mill Pool weighing 3 & 4lb. On Wednesday, Bill Likely recorded a 5lb grilse caught on a Cascade fly and Colm Ward accounted for a 3½lb fish also caught on the fly. On Saturday, visiting French angler ‘Freddy’ accounted for two grilse caught on a spinner from the Worm Hole weighing 3 & 4lb. Dylan McDowell landed a 4½lb grilse from The Meadow caught on a fly. On Sunday, Gary Morrow recorded two grilse caught from the Black Hole weighing 3½ & 4lb.
Plenty of rainfall is forecast for the week and I would expect the river to rise over the week and with big spring tides coming this week, the run of grilse should continue. Prospects look good.
For info/bookings etc on the Drowes Fishery & Lough Melvin see www.drowessalmonfishery.com or Tel: 071 9841055.

Lough Melvin was very quiet once again this week with only small hatches of fly and very few rods out fishing. Some anglers did report good catches of trout from the Rossinver Bay area to wet fly. Eddie McFadden recorded another big trout. The fish weighed 10lb 14oz and was caught on an Octopus fly from Bilberry Island.
There were some fair conditions on the Eany this week with good floods on Monday (0.71m), Friday (0.90m), Saturday (0.96m) and Sunday (1.04m). The gauge average for the week read a healthy 0.64 metres. The fishery was reasonably busy for the time of the year with 47 visiting rods fishing for the week with 22 of these fishing on the Saturday. There were a number of fish recorded for the week but the catches were not as numerous as would be expected. Certainly the fish are well spread out over the fishery with all the floods we have had and this may account for the lower than expected catches.
On Monday John O’Donnell recorded a fine 14lb salmon caught on a spinner from the Carry Pool. Rose Burke accounted for a 4½lb grilse caught on a spinner. The following day, Greg Campbell accounted for a grilse caught on the spinner as did Nigel Kells and Gerry O’Neill on Saturday. On Sunday, grilse caught were recorded by Paddy Kelly (1 fish), Stewart Hamilton (2 fish) and John O’Brian (1 fish).

The Owenea received fair water on Monday (0.24m) but the river then dropped away to lowish levels by Thursday (0.14m). On Friday there was a fair flood reading 0.26 metres and a better flood on Saturday and Sunday reading 0.38 and 0.30 metres respectively. The gauge average for the week read 0.24 metres. The fishery was well attended with 61 visiting rods fishing for the week with 35 of these fishing at the weekend.
There was a good run of salmon over the week and there good numbers of the same caught over the week. Given here are some of the catches. On Monday, John Boyle recorded a 5lb grilse caught from beat 7 on the fly. On Tuesday, Alan Watson recorded 2 fish caught on the fly from beat 8 weighing 11lb and 4lb. Billy Blair caught and released a small grilse on the fly from beat 8. John Boyle recorded a further grilse caught on the fly from beat 8 which he released and Paul McCarthy accounted for two grilse caught on the fly weighing 2½ and 4lb. On Wednesday, Paul recorded a further salmon caught weighing 10lb. This was caught from Bryan’s Pool on beat 8 on the fly. Gareth Hughes accounted for a 4¾lb grilse caught on the spinner from beat 6. On Thursday, Paul McCarthy recorded another grilse weighing 4½lb caught from beat on the fly. John Northridge accounted for a 5½lb grilse caught from the Gubbin on beat 5 on the fly. On Friday, William Foster landed a 4lb grilse from The Battery on beat 6 on a spinner. On Saturday, H. Patterson recorded grilse of 4½ & 6lb caught on worm from beat 9. On Sunday, Raymond Crawford accounted for 2 fish weighing 9 & 5lb caught on the spinner from beat 8 and Neil Black landed a 5½lb grilse from the Car Pool on beat 5.
The forecast for the coming week is for plenty of rain so I would expect good conditions and the prospects look good.

Monday 3rd to Sunday 9th August 2009.
There were fair water levels on the Drowes over the week with the gauge reading around the 5 mark. The fishery was reasonably busy with most visiting rods fishing over the weekend. A number of small grilse were reported being caught over the week and indeed there was a good run of grilse reported. The two best fish were reported at the weekend. On Saturday, David McKee recorded a fine 11½lb salmon caught from the Mill Pool on a cascade fly. On Sunday, Phil Wright accounted for a 9lb salmon caught on a Green Highlander fly from Corry.
At present the gauge is reading 5.5 and there is a good run of grilse so prospects look good though the forecast for the week is for little rain and sunny spells for the greater part of the week until Friday & Saturday when heavy rain is predicted. Sunday is forecast to become drier and cooler.
For info/bookings etc on the Drowes Fishery & Lough Melvin see www.drowessalmonfishery.com or Tel: 071 9841055.
Lough Melvin was very quiet this week with only small hatches of fly and very few rods out fishing. It seems those anglers that fished accounted for up to two decent trout a session but it was hard work! It seems there was no salmon angling to talk off.
The Eany started the week with fair water on Monday (0.50m) but as the week progressed the water fell away to low summer levels and by Sunday the gauge was only reading 0.16m. The gauge average for the week was low reading only 0.27 metres. The fishery was understandably, fairly quiet with only 11 visiting rods fishing for the week, 5 of these on Monday. I have only one fish recorded to date. This weighed 7lb and was caught on the worm from Bonnyglen by Dimitrios Kandiotos on Thursday.
The forecast for the coming week is for sunny spells with only a small chance of showers up to Thursday. Friday and Saturday are forecast to give heavy rain showers which will hopefully give good floods. Sunday is to become drier and cooler. The main run should start this week so prospects look good towards the weekend especially.

Monday gave fair conditions with the gauge reading 0.28m but as the week progressed the river dropped to low summer levels and was only reading 0.10m by Sunday. The gauge average for the week was low reading 0.16 metres. The fishery was reasonably busy considering the low water conditions for most of the week with 45 visiting rods fishing for the week. It seems that any fish caught, were caught on Monday & Tuesday. Jerry Irwin recorded a 6lb grilse caught on the spinner on Monday from beat 9. On Tuesday, Alan Watson recorded 2 grilse caught from beat 8. The fish weighed 3½ & 4½lb and were caught on the fly (Foxford Shrimp).
The forecast for the coming week gives only a small chance of showers with sunny spells up to Thursday. Friday and Saturday are forecast to give heavy rain showers which will hopefully give good floods. Sunday is to become drier and cooler.

Monday 27th July to Sunday 2nd August 2009.
Water levels rose on the Drowes over the week due to good rain showers and the gauge was reading 5.5 by the end of the week. The fishery was very quiet with only a limited number of visiting rods fishing over the week. Consequently there were few salmon recorded over the week despite good numbers of grilse observed running through the Sea Pools at the bottom of the fishery and away up the river. Colin Gardiner caught a grilse on the fly on Saturday and Adie McGrane recorded a 3lb grilse caught on the fly on Sunday.
For info/bookings etc on the Drowes Fishery & Lough Melvin see www.drowessalmonfishery.com or Tel: 071 9841055.
Lough Melvin was very quiet over the week with very few anglers venturing out to fish for salmon or trout. The weekend was also very quiet which may well be due in part to a number of anglers attending the World Cup fished on Mask over the weekend the latter part of the week. Water levels on Melvin rose by a fair amount over the week and allied to light hatches of fly, the trout fishing was hard work with those anglers that did fish reporting only small catches.
On a sourer note, there were thefts on the Lough. On Thursday night a 25HP Mercury engine with full controls (steering wheel etc) and 15HP Honda (electric start) were taken from Hill’s Bay. If anybody is offered the same and is suspicious they should contact the Garda at Kinlough, Tel: 071 9841412. These kind of incidents spoil everyone’s enjoyment of angling and if we can all help to stamp out these crimes, the world will be a better place for all honest people.
There were some good floods over the week on the Eany Fishery with the exception of Thursday when the water levels fell to 0.29 metres. The gauge average for the week was high reading 0.73 metres. Decent numbers of salmon ran into the fishery and the run of salmon is picking up. The fishery was quiet for the greater part of the week with only 8 visiting rods fishing from Monday to Saturday. Sunday was busier however with 17 visiting rods fishing. There were a number of salmon recorded over the week with all but one caught on Sunday. On Tuesday, Billy Hamilton accounted for a 10¾lb salmon caught from the Eanymore on a spinner. On Sunday, Billy landed a further salmon weighing 8lb from the same location on a spinner once again. Seamus McHugh recorded a 12lb salmon caught from the Devlin on a spinner. Phillip Armstrong accounted for 2 grilse weighing 3 & 5lb caught from the Devlin and angling partner Desmond Braniff landed a 6 & 9½lb salmon from the Devlin.
For info, etc on the Eany Fishery contact: The Eany Angling Centre. Tel: 074 9736559 (7am to 1pm).
There were good water conditions all week on the Owenea (with the exception of Wednesday, 0.26m) due to heavy rains during the week. The gauge average for the week was fairly high reading 0.34 metres. The fishery was reasonably busy with 55 visiting rods fishing over the week with 18 of these fishing on Sunday. The fishing picked up and there were good numbers of salmon caught over the week. Most of these were grilse in the 2 to 3lb bracket. The smaller grilse usually appear before the better fish and I would take this as a sign that the main run of fish will arrive very shortly.
Given here are some of the catches. On Monday, John Kerr recorded a 6lb salmon caught on the fly from beat 9. On Tuesday, Billy Blair caught and released a 2½lb grilse on the fly from beat 8. Roland Bradley recorded a 2½lb grilse caught on the fly from beat 6. On Wednesday, Billy Blair recorded two grilse caught on the fly from beat 8. The fish weighed 2 & 3lb and were both released. On Saturday, Davy Arbuckle recorded two fish caught from beat 8 on the spinner. The fish weighed 8½ & 1½lb with the smaller fish being released. The following day (Sunday) Davy recorded the best fish of the week, a salmon of 12½lb caught on the fly from beat 8. Billy Blair accounted for two more grilse caught on the fly from beat 8. The fish weighed 2 & 4lb with the smaller of these being released. Brian Smith accounted for two grilse caught on the fly from beat 9 weighing 2 & 3lb with the smaller of these being released again.
The forecast for the coming week is for mainly dry weather unfortunately with the chance of showers in the West and North of the province until Sunday when heavier rain will set in. Hopefully the showers will fall in the right place! Prospects are good if we get reasonable or good water levels and the run of grilse should increase again next week.
