Salmon and trout angling | Coarse angling
Monday 26th January to Sunday 1st February 2009
With the cold weather there seemed to be fewer anglers fishing this week and I have no record of any salmon caught for the week. One fish was lost on Thursday at the Mill Pool and a number of fresh fish were seen showing in a couple of pools. The river has plenty of water at the time of writing and is reading just under 9 on the gauge at Four Masters Bridge. The forecast for the coming week is somewhat Artic with gales, low temperatures, sleet & snow. Plenty of thermals and layers required piscators!

Lough Melvin opened for Salmon fishing on Sunday. The day was fair given the time of year and the moderate northerly wind. 11 boats were out fishing for the opening day and it was a good opening day with 2 fresh salmon caught. Congratulations go to Kevin Flanagan who caught the first salmon at 2pm. The fish weighed 5½lb and was caught from the Garrison shore on a Devon Minnow. At 4pm. Seamus O’Dare recorded the second salmon caught from the Lough. The fish weighed 9½lb and was also caught from the Garrison shore on a trolled Devon Minnow. This is a very encouraging start to the season but the forecast for the coming week is poor with cold gales, sleet and snow. Still, there’ll be some hardy souls out!
January 19th to 25th 2009
The week began once again with anglers hopeful of catching the first salmon of the season from the Drowes.
Finally, on Friday 23rd, the first salmon from the Drowes was caught (and the first salmon in Ireland caught on the fly). At 4.30pm, after a 25 minute fight, Adrian McGrane, Kells landed a 10lbs sea liced salmon just downstream of the Blackwater on a red & yellow tube fly of his own tying. Fishery owner, Shane Gallagher presented Adrian with the Thomas Gallagher Perpetual Trophy for the first salmon and Adrian donated the fish to The Peak Restaurant, Bundoran. The salmon was cooked on Sunday evening and a collection taken from all those in attendance which was donated to the Bundoran R.N.L.I (lifeboat).
On Sunday there were two further salmon caught. Around 2.30pm, Anthony Carty recorded a salmon of 8½lb caught from The Broadwater on a yellow belly Devon minnow. At the same time, Colomba Fitzpatrick landed an 8lb salmon from the Mill Pool.
Prospects look good for the coming week now there are a number of fresh Springer’s in the fishery. At the time of writing the weather is fine with little wind and sunshine and the forecast is fair until Thursday night when the rain, sleet and winds are forecast to return. This will please the salmon probably more so than the anglers!
