Salmon and trout angling | Coarse angling
Monday 20th Sunday 26th July 2009
The fishery was fairly quiet over the week with a limited number of visiting rods fishing. It seems everybody is waiting for the main grilse run to start. The river rose gradually over the week from 0.45m on the gauge on Monday to read 0.5m by Sunday. This gave fair conditions and there were a number of salmon recorded for the week, mainly grilse. There were also a number of coloured fish caught that were returned and are not mentioned here.
On Wednesday, Gary Bennett recorded a fresh 10lb salmon caught from the Washstones on a shrimp. On Friday, Colm Harrigan accounted for a 3lb grilse caught from the Sea Pools on a fly. George McAteer caught and released two grilse. The fish weighed 3 & 3½lb and were caught from the Sea Pools on shrimp. On Saturday, Gerry Mahon recorded two grilse caught on the fly from the Sea Pools weighing 3½ & 4lb. Ted Walsh accounted for a 3lb grilse caught on the fly from the Sea Pools and Callum Kettles recorded a 4 ½lb grilse also caught from the Sea Pools on a fly. On Sunday, Gary Morrow recorded two grilse caught from the Money Hole on shrimp, weighing 3 & 3 ½lb and J. Daragh also recorded two grilse caught on a Flying ‘C’ lure from the Washstones weighing 4 & 4 ½lb. The forecast is for some rain during the week and hopefully this will equate to a good rise in water levels to encourage more fish up the river.

Melvin was fairly quiet once again this week and there is little to report on the salmon angling front with little salmon angling effort taking place this week. A few boats ventured forth over the week for trout with some of these reporting decent catches of mainly sonaghan. One pair of anglers on Tuesday reported 18 sonaghan caught in the deeps off Bilberry with 11 of these of a good size. There was a good hatch of mayfly at times in certain areas of the lough and this stirred some nice gillaroo into feeding from the surface, though most anglers concentrated on fishing the deeper water for sonaghan. One angler fishing out of Breffni recorded a 4½lb grilse caught on a Green Peter wet fly.

Local angler Eddie McFadden had a good days fishing on Monday recording a fine 12lb 1oz trout caught on wet fly. The fish was caught from the western end of Maguire’s Island and took a size 10 International Dabbler.
We received plenty of rain this week and consequently there were good floods on each day of the week except for Friday & Saturday when the water dropped to fairly low levels. The gauge average for the week was high reading 0.87 metres. The fishery was a little busier with 21 visiting rods fishing for the week. Fishing improved somewhat with more fish entering the river and there were a number of salmon recorded over the week. On Monday, Andy Lennox recorded a 5½lb grilse caught on the fly from Scullion’s Run. Mickey McLaughlin accounted for a 10¼lb salmon caught on a spinner from the Counter Pools losing a further fish and Cathal McLaughlin landed a 7½lb fish caught on a spinner. On Tuesday, Mickey McLaughlin recorded a 6½lb grilse caught from the Devlin on a spinner. John Wilson accounted for a 6½lb grilse caught from the Eanybeg on a spinner. On Wednesday there was a 12lb salmon caught from the Eanymore and I am awaiting details of the captor.
The forecast for the coming week is for rain showers at times and hopefully these will bring some good floods. The main grilse run will be arriving soon and is eagerly awaited by all.

The river ran at lowish levels (0.14m) over Monday and Tuesday but on Wednesday and Thursday we received fair floods reading 0.28 & 0.26 metres on the gauge. The river then fell away over the following two days until Sunday which gave a good flood reading 0.50 metres. The gauge average for the week was fair reading 0.23 metres. The fishery was a little busier with 40 visiting rods fishing over the week. The fishing picked up this week with a number of grilse and salmon entering the river and there was four double figure fish recorded for the week along with a number of grilse. On Wednesday, Michael McCroary recorded a 4lb grilse caught on the fly form beat7. Thomas Irvine accounted for a 4lb grilse caught from beat 8 on Flying ‘C’ lure. Joe McMullin had a good day recording a 12lb salmon and a 5lb grilse caught from beat 8 on a Flying ‘C’. On Thursday, Billy Blair accounted for a 3lb grilse caught on the fly from beat8. Bill Fee recorded a 4lb grilse caught on a spinner form beat 9. One local angler landed 2 fish and I am awaiting details of the same. On Friday Billy Blair recorded a further grilse weighing 3lb caught from beat 9 on the fly. Sean Kane accounted for a small grilse caught and released from beat 8 on the fly. On Sunday, Kevin Agnew recorded a 4 ½lb grilse caught on the spinner form beat8. Michael McCroary registered a 10 ½lb salmon caught on the fly from beat 7 and Ron Turner accounted for a 10lb salmon caught on a spinner from beat 8. The forecast for the coming week is or rain at times which hopefully will give some good water levels over the week. The fishing will pick up over the next number of weeks as numbers of grilse entering the fishery each day increases.

Monday 13th Sunday 19th July 2009.
Despite the odd shower of rain over the week, water levels in the Drowes fell over the week to read only 4.5 metres on the gauge at the Four Masters Bridge by the end of the week. A fair number of visiting rods fished for the week and a number of grilse entered the fishery. With the low conditions, most salmon recorded were caught at the bottom of the river in the sea pools.
On Monday, Charlie Craig recorded a 4lb grilse caught and released from the Sea Pool on a fly. Colin Gardiner accounted for a 3lb fish on the fly, also from the Sea Pool and Michael Carey landed a 5lb fish on a prawn from the Sand Hole. On Tuesday, A. Rafferty recorded a 4lb grilse caught from the Sea Pool on a fly. George McAteer landed a small grilse caught on shrimp from the Sea Pool. D. Ward accounted for a 3lb grilse caught on a fly from the Sea Pool and Gerry Mahon accounted for a 3lb fish on the fly. On Friday, Harry Armstrong recorded a 4lb grilse caught from the Sand Hole on a Toby lure. On Saturday, Paul Atkinson accounted for a 5lb grilse caught from the Blackwater on a Flying ‘C’ and a disabled angler recorded a 5lb grilse caught from the Mill Pool on a worm.
The forecast for the week is for rain showers which are much needed to raise water levels and encourage more fish to run.

There were some rain showers over the week but these did nothing to raise water levels on the Lough which fell slightly over the week. There were a number of rods fishing over the week for salmon and trout. Most salmon anglers fished at the weekend but the fishing was very quiet and I have no reports of any salmon caught for the week. The trout angling was very variable with some anglers doing very well and catching up to ten good sonaghan for the session and others rising very little. It seemed to be dependant on area and time of day. The deeps off the Schoolhouse and Bilberry Island fished well and the evening (6pm onwards) was the time to be fishing. Little seemed to happening during the day.
Water levels for the week were variable but we received only one reasonable flood (0.8m). This occurred on Thursday night and had fallen away to 0.48m by the morning. The gauge average for the week read 0.42 metres. The fishery was quiet with only 10 visiting rods fishing for the week and I await details of any catches. The forecast for the week is for wet weather and hopefully we will receive some decent rain showers. We require some good rainfall to raise water levels significantly.
Water levels in the Owenea were on the low side for the most part. There was a fair flood on Wednesday however which read 0.30 metres on the gauge. This flood took a long while to clear however. The gauge average for the week read 0.19 metres. The river was reasonably busy with 25 visiting rods fishing for the week. Most of these fished during the low water periods however and only two fished the flood on Wednesday! To date I have only heard of one salmon taken. This was caught by Kevin O’Neill on Wednesday. The fish weighed 10lb and was caught on the fly from Gavigan’s Pool on beat 8.
The forecast for the coming week is for wet weather which will hopefully raise water levels and give us some good angling opportunities.

Monday 6th Sunday 12th July 2009.
The river rose slowly from Monday and was reading 0.52 on the gauge by Wednesday. For the rest of the week the river held around this level and was reading just under 0.5 on Sunday evening. This gave some good angling conditions over the week. The main grilse run still does not seem to have started yet and the fishery was not particularly busy. Fair numbers of salmon must have entered the fishery however, judging by catch figures, since the rods that did fish recorded decent numbers of salmon caught.
On Tuesday, John Buggy recorded an 8 lbs. salmon caught from the Mill Pool on a Bann Special fly. On Wednesday, Milo Hogan accounted for a 4 lbs. grilse caught on a Bann Special fly also from the Mill Pool and his angling partner also recorded a 4 lbs. grilse caught from the Eel Weir on a Bann Special fly. Colin Berriman recorded 2 grilse caught weighing around 3 lb each caught from the Sea Pool on a fly. Bill Likely caught and released a 10 lbs. salmon on a Toby lure. Twelve year old Hugh Creaton had a great day. Fishing for the first time for salmon, he caught three grilse on a green & gold Toby lure. The fish weighed from 2½ to 5 lbs. and were caught from the Washstones and the Sand Hole. On Thursday, Joe Hall accounted for 5lb grilse caught from the Black Hole on a fly. Neil McMullin recorded 7½ lbs. fish caught from the Black Hole on a Flying ‘C’ lure. Dave Johnson recorded a 3 lbs. grilse caught from the Island Pool on a fly and Paul Cooper caught two grilse, the best weighing 5 lbs., releasing both of these at Lennox’s Bridge on a Flying ‘C’. On Friday, Maurice Barry landed two small grilse from the Boat House on worm. On Saturday, regular French visitor, Frederic Rollin caught and released two small grilse on the fly. On Sunday, Joe Daragh recorded a 4 lbs. grilse caught from Rooney’s Turn on a Flying ‘C’ and Marty King landed two grilse weighing 3 & 3½ lbs. from the Money Hole on shrimp.
The forecast for the coming week is for large amounts of rain which should raise water levels further and prospects look good.
For info/bookings etc on the Drowes Fishery & Lough Melvin see http://www.drowessalmonfishery.com/ or Tel: 071 9841055.
There were variable weather conditions on Melvin over the week with most days giving heavy thundery conditions. This did the trout angling no favours and any anglers that ventured out after the same reported the fishing as hard going with good trout hard to come by during the week. The weekend seemed to pick up somewhat with a number of anglers reporting good fishing for sonaghan such as Billy Granger who caught 10 good sonaghan on Saturday fishing the deeps off Bilberry Island. The salmon fishing was very slow with few anglers venturing out after the same. There were a number of grilse caught during the week but nothing reported at the weekend.
The week started with a fair flood (0.72m) on Monday but the water seemed to take an age to clear. The water then fell away through the week to low summer levels once again until Sunday when the river received a minor flood (0.42m) which also took a long while to clear. The gauge average for the week read 0.36 metres. The fishery was fairly quiet with only 8 visiting rods fishing this week. I have not heard of any salmon caught to date. The forecast is for good amounts of rain in the coming week so hopefully we will receive good water levels in the coming week.
The Owenea had fair water levels at the start of the week reading 0.20m on the gauge for the first two days of the week. Water levels then dropped away over the week to low levels (0.10m) by Saturday until a fair flood on Sunday (0.32m) but the water took a very long time to clear. The gauge average for the week read 0.18 metres. The fishery was not particularly busy and 14 visiting rods fished over the week. To date I have only 1 salmon recorded in the catch register. This was a fine 14 lbs. salmon caught on Sunday on a spinner by local angler Jim McLean from Bryan’s Pool on beat 8.

Monday 29th June to Sunday 5th July 2009
The river ran at low levels all week (under 0.4m on the gauge) due to a lack of rain. The weather was also sunny, warm and very thundery. The weekend brought good rain showers though by Sunday the river had only started rising with the delaying effect of Lough Melvin. Grilse entered the fishery over the week but only in small numbers due to the low water. The fishery was quiet with only a limited number of rods fishing over the week. The only fish recorded were caught on Monday. Joe Hall accounted for a 5lb grilse caught from the Sand Hole on a shrimp. Gerry McMahon recorded a 6lb grilse caught from the Sea Pool on a shrimp and a visiting French Angler landed a small grilse from the Eel Weir Pool.
At the time of writing (Wednesday) the river has risen to 0.5 metres on the gauge at the Four Masters Bridge and is still rising so prospects look better for the latter half of the week. Heavy rains are forecast for the weekend which should see Lough Melvin and the river rise further giving good water heights.
For info/bookings etc on the Drowes Fishery & Lough Melvin see hwww.drowessalmonfishery.com or Tel: 071 9841055.
Weather conditions were not particularly conducive to angling over the week once again with thundery, heavy conditions. The weekend, thankfully, brought heavy rains which started to raise the Level of the Lough and should improve water conditions.
The salmon angling was very good with most anglers seeming to come in with a fish. All catches were grilse in the 3 to 4lb range caught trolling. The biggest I heard of weighed 6½lb. the wise anglers are heading out very early (5.30am). I would say the average was one grilse per boat over the week. Few anglers were out fishing for trout and it seems that there is little to report. Those that did fish only ventured out for ‘a few hours’. One rod fishing Rossinver Bay reported seeing large numbers of grilse showing but only rose one salmon on the fly which was not hooked.
There was good rain on Wednesday night which gave the Eany a small flood (0.50 metres) on Thursday. The showers continued giving a better flood (0.90 metres) on Friday. These two floods were very dirty however due to the river being very low for so long beforehand and seemed to take an age to clear. The weekend also gave fair conditions with the gauge reading 0.45 and 0.65 metres on Saturday and Sunday. The gauge average for the week read 0.39 metres.
Despite the fair conditions at times the river was not particularly busy with only 10 visiting rods fishing for the week, 6 of these on the Thursday when the water was very coloured. The only salmon I have recorded to date was caught by Alan Cully on Thursday. This weighed 9lb and was caught on the worm from Bonnyglen Falls. Water levels are dropping again at present but heavy rain showers are forecast towards the weekend which should give good angling conditions.
The Owenea ran at very low levels from Monday to Wednesday but rain over the latter half of the week meant that the river gradually rose each day from Thursday and was reading 0.28 metres by Sunday. This gave good angling conditions over the weekend though the weather was very heavy & Thundery. The gauge average for the week read 0.14 metres. Despite fair conditions over the weekend, only 13 visiting rods fished for the week, 9 of these at the weekend. There were a number of salmon caught on Sunday. John Boyle recorded two salmon caught on the fly on Sunday. These weighed 4lb & 5½lb (returned) and were caught from beats 7 & 9. George Anderson accounted for a 4½lb grilse caught on the worm from beat 4 and there was a 10lb salmon caught and I am awaiting details of the same. Frank Walker fished over the week and he recorded 3 fish caught back on the 18th of June. These weighed 6, 7 & 8lb and were caught on a spinner and worm from beat 8.
At present the river is dropping again but heavy rains are forecast for Friday and the weekend which should give good angling conditions.
