John O'Neill and his 7.5lb salmon from the Drowes
There were good conditions for angling throughout the week with warm spring weather for the most part and the river dropping from 6 on the gauge. There were good numbers of salmon caught for the week. On Monday, John O’Neill recorded a 7½lb salmon caught on a Flying ‘C’ from the Old Sea Pool. Fishery owner Shane Gallagher accounted for an 8lb salmon caught on a Rapalla from Melly’s High Bank. Thomas Colgan accounted for a 7lb fish caught from the Old Sea Pool. There were 2 further fish reported over the week weighing 7lb each caught on a black Flying ‘C’. On Saturday, Andy Latimer recorded a 7lb fish caught on the fly from Briney’s. John Anthony, accounted for a 7lb fish also caught from Briney’s on the fly. Anthony Carty recorded a 9lb salmon caught on a Flying ‘C’ from Tinker’s Hole and there was a 6lb fish caught from the Spa Well. On Sunday, visiting French angler Frederick Rollin, caught on the fly and released a 6lb fish from the Meadow.

The Lough was very quiet this week with virtually no one fishing over the week so there is little to report!
Monday 9th to Sunday 15th March 2009
The weather was fairly settled throughout the week and the river was at a nice for height for angling over the week. There were fair numbers of rods fishing and fair numbers of salmon caught. On Wednesday, Christy Jacob recorded a 9lb salmon caught on the fly from the Island Pool. The following day, Jonathan Kerr accounted for a 10½lb fish caught from Briney’s Pool on a Willie Gunn Waddington fly.

On Saturday, Brian McEvoy recorded a fine 16lb salmon caught from the Old Sea Pool on a black Flying ‘C’ (see pic). On Sunday, Sean O’Neill accounted for a 9lb fish caught from the Old Sea Pool on prawn. Tony Parker recorded a 6lb fish caught from The Meadow on the fly.
There is a touch of spring in the air at this time of writing with warm air temperatures for the time of year. Prospects look good for the coming week with the Drowes running at good levels and settled weather forecast for the week.

Despite fairly settled conditions, Melvin was fairly quiet over the week with less boats out fishing than would be expected. To date I have heard of no salmon being caught. Darren Maguire lost a good salmon on Friday after playing the fish for 15 minutes! There certainly a lot of salmon showing in the Lough at times, especially around the Garrison area.
Monday 2nd to Sunday 8th March 2009

Last week was wintery with falls of snow and sleet in the mainly easterly winds. This all meant that only the hardier were out fishing and the angling effort was light. There were decent water levels in the river with the water mainly falling through the week due to the frosty weather. With a low angling effort there were not too many salmon to report. On Monday, John Gill caught a 10 lb salmon and I have heard of two further salmon caught the same day and am awaiting details of the same.

At present the gauge is reading just under 7 and falling slowly. The forecast for the week is for frosty nights with only light sleet and rain showers so the river should continue to fall nicely. Prospects look good for those braving the cold now that there are a number of spring salmon in the fishery.

With the cold, arctic like conditions over the week allied to the easterly winds there were very few anglers who ventured out on Lough Melvin. I have little to report at present. This week is forecast cold but a little more settled and some westerly winds are forecast so there may be more conducive conditions for salmon angling.
Sunday 1st March 2009
The Erne Estuary opened for sea trout fishing on Sunday. The Estuary is still closed for salmon (and sea trout over 40cm) fishing so any large sea trout have to be released. There were a number of anglers out fishing but conditions were cold and difficult. With the E.S.B. Hydro Dam generating, there was too much brown water flowing down the estuary for an anglers liking! To date I have heard of a number of good sea trout caught, all on sandeel. Michael Patton and two friends caught 4 sea trout with the smallest weighing 1¼lb and the best 4lb.
