Salmon and trout reports

Monday 14th to Sunday 20th September 2009.

RIVER DROWES

The week brought dry and sunny weather with no rainfall and the Drowes dropped from 7 on the gauge on Monday to read 5.5 by Sunday evening. The river was quiet over the week but there were decent numbers of salmon caught on Saturday & Sunday and anglers reported seeing good numbers of fresh salmon showing. On Saturday, Daryl Kennedy recorded 3 grilse caught on shrimp weighing from 5 to 7½ lb. Young Pauric Kettles accounted for a 3lb grilse caught on worm from the Crooked Pool. Gary Morrow recorded 4 grilse caught on shrimp over the weekend weighing from 5 to 7lb.
The forecast this week is for good rain at the start of the week with rain showers over the week becoming lighter so I would expect the Drowes to rise to a degree over the first half of the week. This will ensure good water up to the end of the season.

For info/bookings etc on the Drowes Fishery & Lough Melvin see http://www.drowessalmonfishery.com/ or Tel: 071 9841055.

LOUGH MELVIN

The weather was very bright sunny and dry this week on the Lough and with the conditions, trout fishing was difficult with fish hard to come by. The Rossinver Fishery held their end of year competition on Saturday and the fishing was hard with only some 10 fish recorded by the 30 boats that fished. The weather remained dry however for the ‘Big Barbecue’ after the competition and this was appreciated by all. The best trout I heard of was a fine 9½lb trout caught trolling from around the mouth of Clancy’s River by Eugene Harron on Tuesday.
The forecast for the coming week is for good rain at the start of the week easing as the week goes on. The overcast and breezier conditions should help the fishing.

EANY FISHERY

The weather was sunny and dry over the week and the Eany Fishery remained at very low summer levels each day. The gauge average for the week read a very low 0.14 metres. The low water conditions and bright, sunny weather meant the fishery was very quiet and we had no visiting rods fishing this week. As such there is little to report.
The weather forecast for the coming week is for good rain on Monday with further lighter amounts of rainfall over the following days. This should give some good conditions for the first half of the week at least.

OWENEA FISHERY

The weather remained dry and sunny all week with no rainfall and the river remained at very low summer levels all week. The gauge average for the week read a very low 0.09 metres. This all meant the fishery was very quiet and only two visiting rods fished for the week. I have only one salmon to report. This was a fine 14lb fish caught by Tommy Corr on a spinner form beat 7 on Tuesday.
The weather forecast for the coming week is for good rain on Monday with lighter rainfall over the following 3 days. This should give us water conditions over the start of the week.

Monday 7th to Sunday 13th September 2009

RIVER DROWES

The first half of the week brought wet weather with heavy rain showers at times. The week then dried up and the rest of the week brought dry, bright & sunny weather. The Drowes was high at the start of the week reading 0.8 on the gauge. The river fell nicely due to the drier weather as the week progressed and by Sunday evening the gauge was reading 7. The fishery was fairly quiet however with most of the angling down to the visiting rods staying in the Fishery Cottages. To date I have heard of two fish caught. A 6lb grilse was reported caught from the Upper Mill and a visiting French angler accounted for a fine 11lb salmon caught from the Sea Pools on the fly.

The forecast is for more dry weather but the Drowes will have good water levels over the week being fed by Lough Melvin which is still fairly high.

For info/bookings etc on the Drowes Fishery & Lough Melvin see www.drowessalmonfishery.com or Tel: 071 9841055.

LOUGH MELVIN

The start of the week brought windy and wet weather with the last four days giving bright and sunny, virtually windless days. Hardly ideal angling conditions! As such there were few rods fishing the Lough for trout. Joe Gallagher landed a fine 4lb 13½oz trout on Tuesday. The fish took a daddy longlegs fly from the Caravan Park shore. There were even fewer for rods fishing for salmon and there is little to report on this front.

EANY FISHERY

The first two days of the week brought rain and wind and gave good water levels on Monday (0.8m) and Tuesday (1.20m). With the onset of bright sunny weather the river than fell away over the week to reach low levels by Sunday (0.18m). The gauge average for the week read 0.47 metres. The fishery was very quiet and only 6 visiting rods fished for the week. To date I have only heard of one salmon caught for the week. This was a fine 10lb salmon caught on the fly from McGuinness’s by Andy Lennox.

The forecast for the coming week is for mainly dry weather and so prospects for good water conditions look poor though a shower in the right place could give a flood.

OWENEA FISHERY

The two days of the week gave wet and windy weather. This gave us two good floods on Monday (0.40m) and Tuesday (0.46m) which ensured the river was still at a nice level on Wednesday (0.25m). The river then dropped away over the rest of the week with the onset of dry, bright, still sunny weather. By Sunday the river was at a low level only reading 0.10m. The gauge average for the week read 0.23 metres. The fishery was reasonably busy given the conditions with 34 visiting rods fishing for the week with 17 of these fishing on Wednesday. To date I have heard of three salmon caught and am awaiting details of others. On Monday, English visitor Richard Pender recorded a 3lb grilse caught on the fly from beat 5 which he released. On Tuesday, Kevin O’Neill accounted for a 6lb grilse caught from beat 6 on the fly and I lost what felt like a good fish on the fly from beat 8, DOH! There was a 5lb grilse caught from beat 9 on Friday by a local angler.

The forecast for the coming week is for dry weather and so it looks doubtful that we will have any decent floods. The non angling population seem delighted though!

Monday 31st August to Sunday 6th September 2009

RIVER DROWES

The weather was very inclement over the week and heavy rainfall ensured the river stayed at fairly high levels. The river was reading 7.5 on the gauge on Monday and this had risen to 8 by Sunday evening. The fishery was fairly quiet. Anglers reported seeing a number of fresh grilse entering the fishery but a large proportion of the catches were coloured fish. David Patterson recorded a 6lb fish caught on a Cascade fly from the Trout Pool on Monday. On Saturday, Marty King recorded three fish caught on the shrimp which were returned and Joe Darra accounted for two fish caught and returned on the shrimp. Ryan Martin landed a 5lb grilse on a Flying ‘C’.

The forecast for the coming week is for wet weather during the first half of the week with a high pressure system bringing fairer weather for the latter half of the week and the weekend which should allow the river to drop to more desirable levels.

The rain is forecast to continue so the river should remain at fair levels over the week.
For info/bookings etc on the Drowes Fishery & Lough Melvin see www.drowessalmonfishery.com or Tel: 071 9841055.

LOUGH MELVIN

The week once again brought plenty of rain and wind on the Lough. This made angling difficult at times and reports are varied once again with some anglers reporting good catches of trout and others struggling to get a couple of decent fish. There was no real angling effort for salmon and there is little to report on this front. The forecast for the coming week is for rain during the first half of the week with the latter half of the week dry as a high pressure system moves in. This should allow the Lough to drop and allied to a spell of settled weather, angling should improve.

EANY FISHERY

There were some good water levels over the week. We received a big flood on Monday (1.75m) which meant the river was virtually unfishable until the evening. Every other day gave lovely water levels except for Sunday when the river dropped to lower levels (0.37m). The gauge average for the week was good reading 0.81 metres. The fishery was not particularly busy however with only 21 visiting rods fishing for the week. Catches were disappointing given the good water levels and there was only a limited number of salmon entered into the catch register. On Monday, John Wilson recorded an 8½lb salmon caught on the spinner from the Junction Pool in very high water (1.60 metres!). Patsy McHugh accounted for a 7lb fish caught on the spinner from McGuiness’s. On Thursday, Malachy Scullion recorded a 7½lb salmon caught from Limm-na-Mhille on the fly.
The forecast for the coming week is for wet weather for the first half of the week with dry, brighter weather during the latter half of the week as a high pressure system moves in. I would expect the best water levels to occur early in the week.

The Eany Angling Centre
Tel: 074 9736559 (7am to 1pm).

OWENEA FISHERY

The week brought good rainfall and this gave us good water levels all week except for Monday when the river was a little too high (0.58m). The gauge average for the week was good reading 0.35 metres. The fishery was reasonably busy with 60 visiting rods fishing for the week. The good run of grilse continued and there were decent numbers of salmon recorded. Anglers reported seeing good numbers of fish showing though strangely enough, most of these were on beats 7, 8 & 9. From beat 6 and up the river, the fish seem to be keeping their heads down! Given below are some of the catches over the week.

On Monday, visiting French angler Pierre Rumeau recorded 3 grilse caught on the spinner from beat 9. The fish weighed 3, 3½ & 6lb and were returned. On Tuesday, Pierre recorded a 3lb grilse caught on the spinner form beat 8. On Wednesday, Eunan O’Connor recorded a 5lb grilse caught on the fly from beat 9 and Pierre accounted for an 8½lb fish caught on the fly from beat 7. On Thursday, Frank Campbell reported a 2½lb grilse caught on a spinner from beat 5 and Pierre recorded a small grilse caught on the spinner form beat 9. On Saturday, Pierre accounted for a 3lb grilse caught on the spinner from beat 4 and Will Taylor reported a 6lb grilse caught on the fly from beat 5. On Sunday, Paul Kelly accounted for a 4½lb grilse caught from beat 9 on a spinner.

The forecast for the coming week is for wet weather over the first half of the week with drier, sunnier weather over the latter half of the week as a high pressure system moves in. I would expect there to be some good water conditions up to Thursday and with the number of salmon in the fishery, prospects look good.
